Interview with Christopher Paolini and Mike Macauley

You may remember Shur’tugal’s coverage of Comic-Con International back in July, where staff of Shur’tugal traveled to the world’s largest fantasy/scifi/horror media convention in the world to cover the event for Shur’tugal visitors. While there, Shur’tugal conducted multiple interviews with Christopher Paolini, all but one of which have already been released.

Mike Macauley, owner of Shur’tugal and author of The Inheritance Almanac, sat down with Christopher Paolini during Comic-Con to discuss the Inheritance Cycle, the Inheritance Almanac, Book 4, and more. The resulting conversation and interview was recorded by the brilliant team at Random House’s Suvudu and recently released as a podcast. The resulting podcast can be listened to below!

Don’t forget to pick up your copy of The Inheritance Almanac, in stores everywhere (and available online as well)!

i’d like to know what does christopher think about the idea of the future alagaesia as a fount of new stories to young writters and many others not too youngs writters or not writters

this could be funny but i have this question for you Mike if you still there

have you ever seen the special world of james cameron specially “the tree of souls” and its “blue people”?
Don’t you think there could be a possible reference to the inheritance cycle?
i dont want criticize cameron’s work, he must have his own rotten tomatoes’ launchers and critics haha, i just was wondering this weird idea about where will be the inheritance cycle on some years starting from a guide as the inheritance almanac and awesome websites like shurtugal.com…
my apologies if i am distorting

Just so you know, I’m going to be a fan of Christopher Paolini for the rest of my life. I can’t wait for his next project.

  • blue eye

Christopher Paolini is stalling. he has had 2 years to finish the book. it’s waaaaaay overdo, it’s no way it could be that long. c’mon dude

  • saadkid08

hey sorry this is the wrong page, but I cant access the interview where he announces the fifth page. A blank comes up. Can anyone help me?

  • Odogblue

Hurry up with Book 4.The suspense is getting annoying.

  • Tyee28164

Whats up with a guy named Richard Marcus and book called What Will Happen In Eragon.
    Worth reading??

  • Rider of Fangs

Mike, do you know of any other authors competing with Paolini? (sorry if I don’t use ‘CP’, I don’t like abbreviating a writers name) I would bet on that, considering he’s on the Bestseller list. Perhaps in your next interview, you could tell us if he has any competition? That would be interesting.

    Meriii Kursiumasu!!!
Merry Christmas!!! (I didn’t metion it in my last post)

  • Rickr B.

I wish book 4 would come out soon. It has been to long in the works. I don’t mean to be critical but perhaps less work on other things like “new project” & more focus on book 4. Please? : ) Your fans are waiting breathlessly. Unless that is the plan, to keep us in suspense forever & not publish the book. Also are there plans for more movies? Would love to see them before I die of old age ; )

Just wondering do you know when any new news will be posted Mike??

    • Unfortunately I have yet to built a time machine, so I am unable to travel into the future to determine when news will pop up for me to post. Sorry. 🙁

Xpctd some news fr Christmas but its alrite…i can wait! Plz suggest me gud books ppl…Adventure/mystery …or if there r any fantasy books better than IC!

    Merry Christmas guyz!

  • Dennis

    Hey Mike;
Where are the xmas giveaways??? No Autographed copies of the Almanac???
O well Merry Christmas to you guys at Shurtugal!!

  • IMHO

truthfully idk, CP seems to have too much on his hands. i really wouldnt be suprised if the entire project is scrapped. im loyal to the serioes but really how long does it take to finish a book that for at least a year has been “near completetion”. personally i think eragon is tired of relaying the by now old story of his accomplishments to CP.

  • Braxtonb

Hopefully another companion guide will come out after the series ends because with the percy jackson series a couple of companion guides came out before it was over and then one came out when the series ended and was pretty good.

  • Kithsahan

cant expect anythin new these days cuz the varden’s busy putting up their christmas decorations and galby is out hunting for the biggest urgal to stuff.

  • sirsimon

how big do you think this book will be? Me thinks it will be hugggggeeeeee, around 900 pages, there will be a lot to write about, everything must be wrapped up in a conclusive and sastifying way

    • Jahooty **

didn’t CP say it was going to be shorter then book 3? that would make it under seven hundred pages… 🙁

i know what you mean big books are always better 🙂

  • lulu

i would have totally read a book called “Kevin”

  • Terrywhitehead

This has to be the longest book in waiting – I’ve almost forgotten that I’d read the first three books – does it actually exist this so called book 4? Will it ever exist – slightly annoyed that a ‘trilogy’ (which means story in 3), is actually in 4 but the 4th is even more mystical than the content of the books!

    • Anonymous

It hasn’t been that long, only a little over two years which is short for most good series. There was three years between Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix. I have one – six book series in which book six will come out in March 2011. Book five was released in 2002, this will be a nine year wait. Book one was released in 1982, so that is 29 years to wait for a series to concluded. The Inheritance Cycle is a short wait and remember the longer the wait the better the book will be!!!!

Check out Lytherus, it list many good series to read while you are waiting for Book 4.

    • HA, longest book in waiting. I encourage you to look up George R. R. Martin. 😉

      • Jahooty **

meh, for that matter look up Lord of the Rings 😛

Thanks for posting this Mike! It was awesome 🙂

  • Brandon Higgins

MIKE, I have this question for you personally. Do you feel sorry for Murtagh and Thorn because of what has happened to them? (this does not go with or against the fourth book).

    • Of course. I don’t think you’d be much of an Inheritance fan if you didn’t feel sorry for those two.

    • A NON

Whether or not I feel sorry for Murtagh and Thorn aside, they’ve found themselve in a “Darth Vader” type situation. They were good guys who went over to the Dark Side (willingly or not) and now genuinely enjoy wreaking havoc and killing innocents in the name of their master. They’re excellent antagonists, not just for the above reason, but because we got to know Murtagh as a good guy and sympathize with him, but also because Murtagh represents a very real possability for Eragon’s future.

I think Angela’s master… forget his name… will be one of those “side stories”

    • Jahooty **

Tenga? I think he was introduce to us to get us speculating about the true name of the ancient language…

  • Anonymous

You’re right Dennis, there was something about a month or so ago through http://www.randombuzzers.com that CP came onto the forums and answered questions that fans posted there. The transcripts can be found on this site clumped together by Mike by subject, if you would like to go back and read them if you haven’t.

    • Anonymous

This was definitely meant to be a reply to Dennis’ question about the random buzzer forums, not sure how exactly it got screwed up and put up here….

  • Anonymous

    Dear CP,
All I want for Christmas is the title of book 4.

    Sincerely,
    an anonymous fan

P.S. Just kidding. I really want a laptop. Me thinks neither will happen 😛

    • Mr. Anonymous

      Hey! Get ur own screenname!!!

      • Anonymous… or someone :)

I didn’t say I was Mr. Anonymous. Just anonymous. Although, I could be Ms. Anonymous. Oh, and I DID get a laptop for Christamas. An early christmas present, yes, but I got it!!! So CP has something to compete with! heh heh heh!

        • Mr. Anonymous

Your luck might swing us in the right direction then…

  • Bob

I think that the two women that Angela was talking to in Brisingr would be key characters in a possible”sideways” story to the events of the Inheritance Cycle.

  • Anonymous

    This is Awesome

  • Dennis

Any new Q&A with CP scheduled anytime soon?

    • Probably after the holidays. I’m still working with Random House to make our live fan chat with Christopher possible.

      • Dennis

Wasn’t there something like this before? I am not sure if was through Shurtugal; possibly random buzzers or something where he would check the forum and answer some questions?? Are you talking about something like that or an actual Live event where we call in or post online?

  • Anonymous

Thanks for the post Mike! I find it interesting about how some loose ends “are not going to conclude in the fourth book.” I’m excited to see what those “threads” are and who it will be about!

    • Mr. Anonymous

      Yes, Sir!!

  • Starviper

If anyone thinks I’m going to buy any other book to do with series (ie the Inheritance Almanac) before I see and read book 4 they have a think coming. I like the series, but I grow tired of waiting for book 4. Hardly a word anywhere on book 4 and not one word about a release year let alone a release date and anything you can find is speculation by fans.

    • Spacechick055

That’s not anyones fault but Paolini’s and personally I’d rather wait for an amazing book, then get one now that just doesn’t do the series justice. No one is telling you to buy the almanac, and if your sooo tired of waiting, then just don’t wait. No one is telling you to wait for the 4th book either. You want to do it, don’t complain about it. Let the man write at his own pace. And besides, the people responsible behind information release are his publishers. So take it up with them, or learn some patience.

  • Spacechick055

    Dear Mike,
Although, like everyone, I wish there were more news about the series, I’m really glad this website is available! Because I know that as soon as anything comes up, you guys will be all over it. It’s very refreshing to find a website that follows a book series like you guys do. I’m an avid reader, and let me tell you the only site that I found that even compares to how well you guys follow things is Mugglenet for all us HP fans 🙂 Anyways, the interview was amazing, keep up the good work everyone! 😀

  • Silvermoonwolf12

Could we possibly have it written down?

  • Www Goldendragon

how do i get in contact with mike macauley

    • Feel free to ask your question here and I’ll answer it for ya.

  • Anonymous

Haha …. what i want to ask Mike … is it weird posting something in third person? O.o Haha! Just a question lol 😀

  • Bdmorelli

which interview has not been released yet and why?

    • Yourearsmells

Yeah, which interview wasn’t released yet?

      • willgall_19

this is the one that had not been released yet but it is now

    • Not sure what you’re talking about. I’m not sitting on any interviews. If one was mentioned during the interview between Christopher and I, we were probably referring to the interviews Christopher did with Shur’tugal and Suvudu. Keep in mind that this was recorded back in July.

      • I’m Back!

Yeah guys remember that it takes Mike 5 months to post an interview.

        • Again, no problem with negative feedback, but at least know what you’re talking about before you make a fool of yourself. This interview was released by Random House on another website, not by Shur’tugal. They controlled when they post it, not me. I simply posted to let people know that Random House released the interview.

          Go be rude elsewhere.

          • I’m Back Again!

That’s new.. you used to delete all my comments. Is Mr. Sensitive getting thick skin? I’m sorry I don’t have a degree in Nerd.. this is the only site I check for Inheritance news. Believe me, if Alagaesia.com had the info I would never visit your crappy site.

And don’t pull out your “We have millions of visitors so you don’t know what you’re talking about” crap again.. The power company has millions of customers, but their service is still crap.

          • Anonymous

Look dude, if you want to talk crap about stuff, go to the forums and stop pestering Mike. I think that you just want to get your kicks from p*ssing people off, and come here because you know people get annoyed at you. You wish that you could do half as good of a job as Mike does. If this is the site that you get your news from, I wouldn’t dis it, I’d be thanking him for every bit of information he gives us, old or not.

Now, onto my actual post, I’m really glad that you posted this interview Mike, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to you and Christopher talk about your respective books, and especially liked the role change between the two of you.

          • Brandon Higgins

Why Don’t you shut up “I’m Back!”, would you prefer it if he did not post any news at all, he works hard at this website, he doesn’t have to, but he does so we can get information on the 4th book. So be thankful that he does do it.

          • People like you are banned for a reason. It’s a bit hard to call someone a nerd/loser/crappy when you anonymously troll websites that offer you good content for free. Your privileges to comment have again been revoked, though I’m sure that comes as no surprise to you.

I don’t go to Burger King and tell you how to do your job, so don’t come here to tell me how to do mine.

          • Zachamavisca

Lol. As my Dad would say at the mention of Burger King, “This ain’t no Burger King, you can’t have it your way!”

          • Brandon Higgins

Well Said, Mike, thank you for your wisdom.

          • Hecroman

Mike, why don’t ya just tell paolini to finish the book as fast as he can,i dont care if the ending is lame,i just want it to end, psst(I agree with I’m Back)

Mike, why don’t ya just tell paolini to finish the book as fast as he can,i dont care if the ending is lame,i just want it to end, psst(I agree with I’m Back)

          • Rider of Fangs

            Dear I’m Back!:

Like two famous people have said:

“Wisdom is highter than a fool can reach” -Phyllis Weatey, a slave, author of ‘A Book on Various Peoms, and inventor of the Cotton Gin. (Her master took the credit)

“The heart of a fool is in his mouth, but the mouth of a wise man is in his heart.” –Benjamin Franklin, author of Poor Richards Almanack and Postmaster of the Crown. And also created the Articles of Confederation. (Correct me if I’m wrong. Thank you!)

Also, because I just love how Scripture can define a person. Forgive me Mike. I learned my lesson after my comment with Pullman, and I regret it. However, I’m darn tired of people who mock others’ because they think the hard work the person puts in daily is unworthy.

“A good man of the good treasure bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” Luke 6:45

Mike, delete this comment if you wish, I won’t hold a grudge or be angry. I just enjoy teaching people a few lessons. Many say I have an epic writing voice, so I thought I could reply to this idiot. And I won’t lie, I do. I won’t regret posting this however. I know religion can’t be talked on the site, but I just love how quotes can make people think, given enough focus and depth.

But as for you, “I’m Back!” you need to realize what MIke is going through. And I bet he’s even more busy now that the Almanack has taken off. (Congratz by the way!) So, you shouldn’t complain about others’ work, especially when that person is doing his/her best at trying to give you new information. At least it’s new! Plus, I wouldn’t be surprised if the updates were slow anyway. Paolini is doing his best to get his book finished.

For those who keep asking when the book will be done, buy a gum stopper, and buy a brain! I’ve been working on a novel myself for the past year and a half. However, I realized recently I would have to start at the beginning. And I had nearly two hundred pages! I realized the story I made would be crap, and I wouldn’t give rubbish to readers. So I rewrote my first chapter, and it blew a people away, so I know I’m doing the right thing.

Writing is an art that must be practiced, so the writer may find his own voice. WIth more experience you gain more knowledge of the art. It takes a long time to give the reader a special ending that they will enjoy. I expect within a few months the manuscript will go through editing and revision. Perhaps-especially how much time he is taking-there may be less errors and mistakes to fix.

            It seems most logical.

I apprectiate anyone who had read this comment, and I hope y’all are fine. (I’m Texan by the way). I hope this might help a little.

            Sayonara,

            Rider of Fangs

            Rokutenchi (booksie.com)

Hope everything goes well for you Mike, and I can’t wait until your next meeting with Paolini. 🙂

          • A NON

Heh. Can’t argue with that. I’ve been working on a novel for nine years and I still haven’t begun writing it yet. Quoting classic literature to get your point across isn’t something to be scorned in my opinion, and “I’m Back!” was WAY out of line with his comments. Mike’s doing what he can, when he can. He’s got a life outside this website too, and he needs to live it. But people are naturally impatient, I guess. It’s sad in my opinion. Oh and Mike, cool site.

          • Jahooty **

i guess haters gotta hate and in your case… trolls gotta troll 😛

  • Chasebos

So Mike I was wondering if you know of any more information similar to this? I would love more info and I love Lytherus, keep up the good work on that end. Also could post a link to the list of Christopher Paolini’s “no comment” answers?

  • Cpillarie

so you were just an early fan and now your friends with Christopher? that’s amazing! and now your even writing books in his world. i have a wonderful story full of history, magic, drama, humor, with well-rounded characters and imaginative places and objects. i would absolutely love to write my own story, and have attempted many times with pen and parchment, but i just don’t know how to start something so massive with just a chapter. I’m 17, and to think Christopher could start something so large at 15 is just a pure work of brilliance. and an excellent job on the Almanac, Mike.

  • Crystal

Ohh… I can’t wait for the next books! (Christopher mentioned them near the end. He said he’d started them & named them!)

  • Mike was really nervous…but he didn’t show it during the interview. Just right before! haha. I’m glad this is up now so everyone can hear it though. 😀

And if you haven’t gotten an almanac yet…ask for one for the holidays! Easy and cheap gift idea.

  • lucius91

i thought you said that there was no news as of yet in your last article for lytherus? i woulda thought that this is more important? not critical of your work but i was just wondering

    • Erm, I said there was no news at that time. Now there is news. I posted said news. I have yet to invent a time machine, so I can’t go into the future and post news that isn’t out yet.

      • lucius91

you had this interview at comic con though? so this news was already available to you was it not?

        • This was released by Suvudu, not Shur’tugal. I had no knowledge of or control over when it would be released. So no, this news was not available to me until it was posted.

  • Anonymous

Well, well, well. apparently there are some benefits to staying up incredibly late.

  • Glaedr

dam i thought there was gonna be more info on book four.oh well. Near the end of the interview i thought that CP was going to say when the book was going to be finished but ended up saying ‘it will hopefully be coming out… before not too long’

    • The main purpose of the discussion/interview was to discuss The Inheritance Almanac, so I hope no one thought differently. 😛

      • Glaedr

oh right. well i can’t wait until there is some more news about book 4!

        • Safriz

Looks like Mr.Paolini is way too busy with all those Chicks he might be getting after being rich and famous,,,and probably Handsome.
Come on Paolini..be done with 4th book, and we all know there is still room for a book 5.

      • john doe

another way to keep talking about the book you wrote or whatever dude get to the book 4 stuff and save all this junk for email spam

        • Jumpergirl93

When you find some way to get news on Book 4 let us all know okay? We all want news just as much as you, but in the absence of news from CP, I think Mike’s Almanac is very interesting!

Great discussion! I like to listen to two authors talk. It was fun to hear Christopher to be the interviewer instead of the interviewee. It was also good to hear he has another project in the works already; I’m sure it’ll be as good as the Inheritance Cycle.

    • It was definitely weird for the tables to be turned. I’m absolutely not used to being interviewed by anyone, especially Christopher. I’m used to talking to him one-on-one in a non-interview setting which made this a bit easier, but it was still *very* odd.

      • It didn’t seem like an interview. It seemed more as two friends having an organized discussion. haha. Still very exciting and as always very interesting! =D

        • Yeah, that’s a more accurate way to describe it. 🙂

          • Kaylalynn 10

when will we get our questions (that we submitted months ago) answered? I understand that this takes a long time and Paolini is busy. But I was reading other comments, and you said there are no more interviews scheduled at the moment. And I’m pretty sure none of the questions asked in the latest “submit questions post” was actually incorporated in an interview with Paolini.
I could be wrong, this is the first time I’ve been on the site in a month… please enlighten me. 🙂

I’m also open for the idea that for some reason, that interview had to be canceled due to complications. I basically want to know if I should be waiting for that interview or not.
            Thanks,
