How I write: Christopher Paolini
Published: March 2004 Issue
I write in my room, at a Macintosh computer. Our house is on the banks of the
Yellowstone River. The movie A River Runs Through It was filmed five
miles from our house. If you watch the Lord of the Rings movies, we have
landscape like that. The Beor Mountains--the 10-mile-high mountains in Eragon--are
simply an extreme exaggeration of the Beartooth Mountains where I live. When the
sun is setting--the mountains with deep shadows on one side and gilded on the
other--it really is the stuff of fantasy.

Elf and efficiency

As Christopher Paolini sips his orange juice at the end of a long day of
interviews and book-signings, the news comes through that Fox has decided to
make the film version of his fantasy novel, Eragon, its big Christmas movie for
2005. Paolini exclaims at the news. This is a just-turned 20-year-old who
doesn't worry about being cool. He's enthusiastic about everything, especially
swords, dragons, the Elvish language he invented, his mother's home-made bread
and the Hobbit house he is building in the family's backyard in Paradise Valley,
deepest Montana...

habit-forming and now are in denial, we regret to remind you that there aren't
any more Lord of the Rings movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic trilogy...

on the road hawking his book for most of the year and was used to far more buyer
interest, sometimes approaching sales of 100 copies in a single day...
