Urgals, or the Urgralgra, are far rougher, and less civilized than humans. They are hunters, ruthless, and warlike. King Galbatorix (known as "Ushnark the Mighty" to Urgals) employed many of the Urgals in Eragon. Urgals are stronger, larger and have greater endurance than humans. As the Prologue of Eragon says, “They resembled men with bowed legs and thick, brutish arms made for crushing. A pair of twisted horns grew above their small ears.” There are many variations of the Urgal, including the Kull, a type of Urgal. Kull are the equivalent of a small giant, with arms and legs “as thick as tree trunks.”
In Eragon, Urgals were under the command of the Empire, enslaved by a spell the Shade Durza created. Urgals are naturally creatures that would fight the other Urgal clans, but under the trance, they would fight side by side. They were forced to do anything Durza told them to. The Urgals discovered a collapsed tunnel of the Dwarves, asd so and found the Varden. When Eragon killed Durza in the Battle Under Farthen Dûr, however, the trance was broken, and the Urgals started to fight each other, ignoring the Varden’s fighters. They were forced to retreat, giving the Varden victory at the Battle Under Farthen Dûr.
In Eldest, a tribe of Urgals come to the Varden to aid in the battle on the Burning Plains. Eragon is reluctant to accept their offer of help, but Nasuada is wise enough to accept all the help she can get. When Nasuada sends four Kull to help guard Eragon, he is at first angered, but after examining their minds he overcomes his prejudice and accepts their aid.
In Brisingr the Urgals fight in the battle between the Varden and The Laughing Dead many were killed. They also fought at the siege of Feinster. Two Urgals are present in Nasuada's Guards called the Nighthawks.
[edit] Urgal Culture
As Arya says, "Urgals are not evil, just overly fond of war." Urgals have a rich culture. They weave blankets(Namna)that tell their tribe's history.
