[edit] General Information

The Ra'zac are nearly invincible, save for their weakness to sunlight and water. Their base of operations is the rock formation, Helgrind, just beyond Dras-Leona. They are the official dragon egg hunters of King Galbatorix. In Helgrind slaves are taken there and the people of Helgrind conduct rituals and finally the slaves are given to the Ra'zac to be devoured. They prey on the humans. Their breath will stun a human and they have an abnormal amount of strength.

When the Riders were still in power, they tried to cleanse Alagaesia of both the Urgals and the Ra'zac. However, in this they were only partly successful, because two escaped, only to have two more children.

[edit] Family

The Ra'zac, or pupae, are the offspring of the original Ra'zac found by Galbatorix in his dark travels. Their parents are the Lethrblaka, which literally means, in the ancient language, "leather-flapper", or "bat".

[edit] Physical Description

The Ra'zac are creatures with a humanoid exoskeleton, large muscles, beaks, and a grayish skin. Their breath can fog the minds of humans, through fear. However, Dwarves are somewhat resilient to this, and elves are totally immune. They can see clearly on a cloudy night, track scents like bloodhounds, and are overall more nimble than humans. They represent strength in areas where humans are weak.

[edit] Childhood

The Ra'zac are born from eggs, laid by the Lethrblaka. At this time, they are known as pupae. As the pupae grow, they take on a humanlike exoskeleton. After twenty years, on a night of a full moon, the Ra'zac shed their exoskeletons, and emerge as Lethrblaka.

[edit] Eragon

In Eragon, the Ra'zac show up in Carvahall, in search for Saphira's egg. They begin to ask questions to the villagers. Most have the good sense to lie about Eragon having the egg, except for Sloan, the butcher. Sloan tells the Ra'zac that Eragon had it, and gives them directions to his farm. Luckily, Eragon and Roran aren't home at the time. However, the Ra'zac torture Eragon's uncle Garrow for information with deadly Seithr Oil, and burn the farm.

After Eragon leaves Carvahall, he and Brom go on a quest of retribution for what the Ra'zac did to Garrow. They track them for months, until they find Seithr Oil, just beyond Teirm.

In Teirm, they enlist in the help of Brom's former associate, Jeod Longshanks. The three of them end up breaking into the Teirm citadel, to view certain scrolls concerning the shipping of Seithr Oil. They come to the conclusion, that the lair of the Ra'zac is in Helgrind, just beyond Dras Leona.

After trekking to Dras Leona, Eragon is ambushed by the Ra'zac and many soldiers, inside a church of the worshipers of Helgrind . He manages to get away, with Brom and Saphira, and leave Dras Leona. however, after leaving, they are both captured by the Ra'zac, who drug Eragon, and kill Brom. They only escape when Murtagh intervenes.

[edit] Eldest

In Eldest, the Ra'zac show up in Carvahall once more, to capture Roran, and use him as a means of capturing Eragon. However, Roran and the rest of Carvahall resist, and fight the Empire. However, the Ra'zac eventually capture Katrina and Sloan, spiriting them away to Dras Leona. Roran uses this as a focal point to draw strength from, as he leads Carvahall to Surda.

At the end of Eldest, Eragon and Roran are united once more. Eragon scrys Katrina, and finds that she is still alive. The cousins make a vow to track down the Ra'zac, and have revenge for what they did to Garrow and save Katrina.

[edit] Brisingr

In "Brisingr" Eragon and Roran attack Helgrind. Saphira flies them to the top and they quickly dicover the lair is hidden with magic. The Lethrblaka attack Saphira while Eragon, using Roran's staff from Eldest, fights along side Roran. The normal Ancient Language death words, as Eragon discovers, do not work on the Ra'zac. He then improvises a spell that blinds one of the Lethrblaka. Saphira is then able to kill both of the parents in a bloody battle. Roran and Eragon ambush and kill one Ra'zac while searching for Katrina. Eragon finds Sloan, alive, in a cell nearby and decides to hide this knowledge from Roran and Katrina until they are gone. He forces Saphira to fly from Helgrind carrying Roran and the newly rescued Katrina. Eragon then kills the other Raz'ac, who tries to make a deal with him, but not before the Raz'ac yells ,"Curssse you, Rider! I curssse you! May you find no roossst nor den nor peace of mind in thisss land of yours. May you leave Alagaesia and never return!"
