Orrin
From The Inheritance Encyclopedia
King Orrin of Surda is an eccentric individual, oftern experimenting in his private laboratory. Although he supports the Varden, Nasuada frequently loses her temper with him due to his carefree, sometimes childish nature. He is described by Saphira as a "long-winded fellow" after he lectures Nasuada on his authority, using much too many words than was necessary. Eragon tells Saphira that if they defeat Galbatorix, Orrin should not become King as he is not as charismatic as Nasuada and would be unable to unite the people as well as Nasuada would.
Orrin is not experienced in war, and so leaves his forces in Nasuada's hands. This was a controversial decision with his colleagues. He often becomes irritated when Nasuada fails to recognise his authority and when he feels that she is being rude. He advises Nasuada at one point to relax more in her position and explains that his "eccentricities" help him concentrate when it really matters. Despite all of these differences, Nasuada has considered proposing to Orrin for political reasons (Brisingr, 122, Paragraph 4).
Orrin fought in the Battle of the Burning Plains and against the Laughing Dead when Murtagh and Thorn attacked the encampment. He lost a great part of his forces to the Laughing Dead and suffered numerous wounds himself.
[edit] Quotes
Orrin seemed pleasant enough... if a bit green and untried when it came to commanding men in war and more than a little odd in the head.
Eldest p590-591
If we overthrow Galbatorix, Eragon said the Saphira, Orrin should not replace him in Uru-baen. He would not be able to unite the land as Nasuada has united the Varden.
Agreed.
