Oromis was presumably the last of the ancient Dragon Riders, and as such was Eragon’s instructor. He claims his main task was to help Eragon and Saphira to understand what principles guide them, so that they do not make the right choices for the wrong reasons. He was also known as Togira Ikonoka, the Cripple Who is Whole, and and Osthato Chetowa, the Mourning Sage.

[edit] Early Life

Oromis was born in the elven city of Luthivíra. He is an elf himself. At the age of twenty, he was presented to the eggs that the dragons had given the Riders, and Glaedr hatched for him.

[edit] Family

He was the last scion, or youngest member, of House Thrandurin, one of the elven houses. Nothing more can be found of his life before becoming a Dragon Rider.

The name of his dragon partner is Glaedr, and like Eragon and Saphira, they share in an unimaginably strong bond.

[edit] Adulthood

After Oromis and Glaedr had served for centuries, it was deemed time for them to retire and instruct the next generation of Dragon Riders, and so he returned to Ilirea (now Uru'baen)and taught.

Morzan and Brom were both his pupils at one point, but when Morzan became one of the Forsworn, Oromis withdrew from mentoring officially, and had not until Eragon came to Ellesméra.

[edit] Naegling

His sword, Naegling, is a bronze-colored blade that matches Glaedr’s scales. In Brisingr, Oromis tells Eragon and Saphira that over the last century, after the Fall, he has been storing energy in the yellow diamond in the sword's pommel. The magical strength is known to have come from Oromis himself, his dragon Glaedr and a number of other elves who poured as much magic as they could into the gem without killing themselves. Oromis has commented that he has stored enough energy in the gem to "move a mountain". It could prove quite powerful if Eragon were to find it.

[edit] Before the Series

Remembering his time as a teacher, Oromis admitted, “Morzan was my greatest failure”.

Oromis had noted Morzan's arrogant attitude towards Brom, Morzan's fellow student, among Morzan's shortcomings, but had failed to rectify the situation. Morzan eventually aided Galbatorix in stealing Shruikan, a dragon hatchling, to replace the one Galbatorix has lost, killing Shruikan’s original Rider in the process. They then fled together, and formed the Forsworn, thus beginning the downfall of the Dragon Riders.

Very little is known about this event, but it is assuredly one of the most important events in Oromis’ life, and in the Inheritance Cycle.

[edit] Eragon

Oromis appears briefly in Eragon, during which he contacts Eragon, as the young Rider laid unconscious and in great pain after killing Durza. He helps Eragon by shielding him from much of the pain, and tells him to go with Arya to Ellesmera to meet him. Oromis's identity is not revealed, only the 'titles' he goes by.

[edit] Eldest

As in Eragon, in which the young Dragon Rider found a mentor in Brom, in Eldest, he finds Oromis. Oromis gives Eragon extensive training, including aspects such as the ancient language and applications of magic.

[edit] Shadow of Doom: The Fall of a Rider

Oromis dies in the third book, Brisingr, and his dragon, Glaedr, died as well. Oromis's death distracts both Eragon and Saphira while capturing Lady Lorana. While they are distracted, the newly formed shade, Varaug, nearly kills Arya, but Eragon awakes in time to distract him and lets Arya finish Varaug off. Eragon then states that, 'you had to help me when I killed Durza, so now I had to help you kill Varaug'.

[edit] Description

Oromis has long silver hair and gray eyes. He chooses to wear shockingly white robes on everyday occasions, an image that perhaps enhances the icon of a sage and mentor. On more formal occasions, we have seen him clad in ceremonial red and black garments, with black gloves. He also doesn't have body hair, a trait shared by all elves.

[edit] Quotes

"He was an elf with silver hair, old beyond measure, though the only sign of age was the expression of great compassion and sadness upon his face."

[edit] Theory

A strong theory has emerged that Faolin is Oromis's son.
