[edit] Arguments for Murtagh and Nasuada

In Eragon it is apparent that Murtagh has an attraction to Nasuada. Nasuada also mentions Murtagh in several seperate places in the cycle, most in a favourable way.

[edit] Arguments against Murtagh and Nasuada

Murtagh is now an enemy Rider and Nasuada is totally dedicated to leading the Varden. She realises that her position makes it unlike for her to be involved in any sort of relationship. They have also only met a few times and do not really know each other very well.

[edit] Evidence in the Books

[edit] Eragon

A somber expression disturbed her [Nasuada's] previously smooth features. "I met Murtagh earlier... He's anxious to speak with you. He seemed lonely; you should visit him." p450

Murtagh's gaze shifted into the distance, and he shook his head. "No, she only wanted to meet me. Doesn't she look like a princess? And the way she carries herself! When she first entered through that doorway, I thought she was one of the great ladies of Galbatorix's court. I've seen earls and counts who had wives that, compared to her, were more fitted for a life as a hog than of nobility." p 465

[edit] Eldest

[When Murtagh has apparently died] "I liked Murtagh a great deal and it saddens me that he is gone..." p24

[After Murtagh has been revealed as the new Rider] "It's a pity that this befell Murtagh when he had already endured so much hardship. I enjoyed his company in Tronjheim and believed he was an ally, despite his upbringing. I find it hard to think of him as our enemy." p662

[edit] Brisingr

[After Eragon and Saphira drive off Murtagh and Thorn] "If we gather enough spellcasters around you, Eragon, I believe we can finally kill Murtagh and Thorn the next time they come to abduct the pair of you." "Don't you want to capture them?" asked Eragon. "I want a great number of things, but I doubt I shall receive very many of them..." p338

[edit] In Interviews

In an interview with Christopher he stated that for some reason the Varden would lose trust in Nasuada. Murtagh being the red Rider and now an enemy this is a prime way to dissolve the Varden's trust. If it was found Nasuada was seeing Murtagh secretly then they would wonder if she was trustworthy and accuse her of treason, or fraternizing with the enemy (Murtagh).
