[edit] Love Life

Many are inclined to think that Eragon and Arya will end up together in the end.

  • Support
    • Angela's prediction that Eragon will fall in love with someone of noble birth and that it is strong enough to outlast empires.

"Angela smiled and said, “An epic romance is in your future, extraordinary, as the moon indicates—for that is a magical symbol—and strong enough to outlast empires. I cannot say if this passion will end happily, but your love is of noble birth and heritage. She is powerful, wise, and beautiful beyond compare.”

    • Eragon has already professed his love for Arya and has shown no interest in any other women in the book, other than Trianna whom Saphira dislikes greatly and some can say Nasuada, who is opposed to magic and is mortal.
    • Eragon says in Brisingr that he could not be with a mortal women only to have her die.
    • The second part of Angela's prediction says that she is beautiful and wise beyond compare. Not many humans are described as beautiful, and since Arya is an Elf she has much more time to view the world than any humans and learn from it, and Eragon certainly sees Arya as beautiful and wise.
    • If Arya became the next rider that dragon would most likely be Saphira's mate. In Eldest Saphira says that whoever Eragon chooses to love she to will be forced to care for them as well. This is most likely a similar connection through Eragon, so whoever Saphira mates with Eragon will feel a connection toward that dragon as well as the rider.
    • In his dream, Eragon departs on a magical ship with a woman. This could be Arya.
    • In an interview with Christopher Paolini he was talking about the relationship between Roran and Katrina always being there from the start, whilst Arya and Eragon are dancing around each other.
    • Arya and Eragon's scene around the campfire in brisingr.
    • Upon the news of someone's death, she's runs to Eragon and he finds himself holding her in his arms
."Eragon." She reached out and grasped his shoulder, and almost by accident, he found himself holding her in his arms. Brisingr page 739
  • Against
    • Eragon has sworn in the Ancient Language that he would never pursue Arya again with out her consent, she has to much pride to allow him to pursue her after all the times she rejected him.
    • The age difference is almost 85 years.
    • If they were speaking in the Ancient Language while in Ellesmera(like Oromis told him to) Arya also said in the AL that she had no feelings for Eragon other than that of a friend but maybe Arya believes she does'nt like Eragon and like Christopher Paolini said you could speak in the Ancient Language if you think what you say is true.
    • In his dream, Eragon departs on a magical ship with a woman. This could be Nasuada.

A reasonable amount of readers believe Eragon will leave Arya and love Nasuada.

  • Support
    • Brisingr, it is stated Nasuada has more power over Eragon than a normal leader would.
    • In Brisingr page 229.
    • In his dream, Eragon departs on a magical ship with a woman. This could be Nasuada.
Nasuada was garbed in a green silk dress that shimmered in the sun, like the feathers on the breast of a hummingbird, in bright contrast to the sable shade of her skin. The sleeves of the dress ebded in lace ruffs at her elbows. White linen bandages covered the rest of her arms to her narrow wrists. Of all the men and women assembled before her, she was the most distinguished, like an emerauld resting on a bed of brown autumn leaves. Only Saphira could compete with the brilliance of her appearance.
    • Angela's prediction could apply to her as well. Nasuada's mother is not known, and many claim her father being the leader of the Varden could work as being of noble birth. Her beauty is mentionned above and many characters say she is wise for one so young.
    • She is closer to Eragon's age.
    • She held Eragon by the arm, brisingr page 245
  • Against
    • Nasuada is against magic.
    • She is mortal
    • Eragon has eyes only for Arya and has claimed he will love no other.
    • In his dream, Eragon departs on a magical ship with a woman. This could be Arya.

[edit] Leaving Alagaesia

"Your fate will be to leave this land forever. Where you will end up I know not, but you will never again stand in Alagaesia. This is inescapable. It will come to pass even if you try to avoid it."
Angela, Eragon p204

"Curssse you, Rider! I curssse you! May you find no roossst nor den nor piece of mind in thisss land of yours. May you leave Alagaesia and never return!"
Raz'ac, Brisingr p65

Dreams roiled Eragon's mind, breeding and living by their own laws. He watched as a group of people on proud horses approached a lonely river. Many had silver hair and carried tall lances. A strange, fair ship waited for them, shining under the bright moon. The figures slowly boarded the vessel; two of them, taller than the rest, walked arm in arm. Their faces were obscured by cowls, but he could tell one of them was a woman. A man stood alone on a pebble beach, the only one who had not boarded the ship. He threw his head back and let out a long, aching cry. As it faded, the ship glided down the river, without a breeze or oars, out into the flat, empty land. The vision clouded, but just before it disappeared, Eragon glimpsed two dragons in the sky.
Eragon p81

Almost everyone agrees that Eragon will leave Alagaesia at the end of Book IV. However, when, where and why remain debatable. It seems that Eragon's dream, as quoted above, is a foreshadowing of this departure. The group of people are most probably elves because their hair is described as silver and they ride proud horses; these are two things we have been told about the elves since.

Some say that the two taller figures are Dragon Riders, Riders of the dragons in the sky, and that one is a man and one is a woman. The man is almost certainly Eragon. Therefore, many believe that the woman is Arya, once she becomes a Rider. Others think that Nasuada will become a Rider. This does not necessarily mean that they are romantically linked.

The man on the shore is argued as well. The main contenders are Murtagh and Roran. This is because they are both main, male characters with reasons for the aching cry. Murtagh could lose Thorn, and Roran could lose Katrina. These reasons would also explain why the faces of the taller two are covered with cowls.

[edit] Reasons

Reasons why Eragon must leave Alagaesia are harder to theorize about because we have so little information linked to it. It could be that the Menoa Tree's price is that they must leave. Hoewever, it seems most elves are going too so it has been suggested that all those who can use magic are leaving. This might be because the true name of the Ancient Language has been found, or because of another reason. It looks like magic may have something to do with it because the ship glides down the river "without breeze or oars". Eragon's Guide to Alagaesia, it is stated he can not be there for a shadow stalks the land. Some however, are opposed to the idea, and think that when Galbatorix is overthrown, Alagaesia's true name will change, therefor he will have left the old Alagaesia. This is questionable, however, because Angela also said that he would leave this land forever. She also would have noticed similar appearances in the prophecies of the two women in Brisingr, which would have been worthy of note. It is also possible that he could be going to one of the islands to train the new rider(s)and dragon(s). This idea, however, hinges on the possibility that the islands aren't considered part of Alagaesia. Many real world examples to the contrary suggest that this theory would not be viable.
