Battle of Tronjheim
From The Inheritance Encyclopedia
The Battle of Tronjheim was the major battle between the Varden and the Urgals in Eragon. The Urgals were sent by Galbatorix and helmed by Durza, as a means to exterminate both the Varden and the Urgals in one fell swoop. The Urgals planned to enter Tronjheim from the tunnels mined through the Beor Mountains. The Varden recieved advance warning, only because a dwarf rambled out of a tunnel, speaking of Urgals following him. Ajihad responded accordingly, rallying the Varden and dwarves. He had Arya and Eragonn help the dwarves collapse cetain tunnels under and around Tronjheim with magic, to force the Urgals to surface and keep the Urgals to the outside of Tronjheim.
The Twins were stationed in the dragon hold above Isidar Mithrim to observe the proceedings and help with communication. Eragon, Saphira, Arya, Orik, and Murtagh fought under Jormundur. The Urgals were first confronted by cauldrons of burning pitch that were pored into the tunnels. They were then faced with a double line of pikemen, and once they, broke, through them, the main force of the army. Eragon fought from Saphira, with Zar'roc. The Varden were dropping further and further back, close to being overwhelmed. Eragon then recieved a message telepathically from the twins, telling him to assist Hrothgar.
Saphira was struck in the chest with an axe, crushing her armour and restricting her breathing. After another urgent message from the twins, saying that urgals were breaking through Tronjheim's floor, she flew Arya and Eragon to the dragonhold. Whilst Arya relieved Saphira of her armour, Eragon took Vol Turin to the base of Tronjheim.
There, he found Durza, and several urgals. Durza dueled Eragon with mind and steel, because Eragon would not tell him where Saphira was. Eragon broke through Durza's defenses around his mind, and was overwhelmed by the Shade's memories. Durza, enraged, dealt Eragon a cursed wound to his back. Arya used her magic to break Isidar Mithrim above them, so that she and Saphira could help Eragon. Durza was distracted by the shattered crystal. Using Brisingr to light his sword on fire, Eragon stabbed the Shade in the heart, killing him. Once Durza had been killed, Eragon fell back, seeing Saphira breathe fire for the first time and the remains of the crystal hanging in midair.
A mysterious entity called Togira Ikonoka and Osthato Chetowa, saved Eragon from the overwhelming flood of memories recieved from the Shade. He also told him to go with Arya to Ellesmera. When Eragon awoke, Angela had healed his wound, but he had a scar to mark it. Murtagh told him that the Urgals, had turned on each other when the spirits that had possessed Durza flew over the battlefield. The Varden had easily eracicated them after that. Groups of urgals were still in the tunnels, though, and the Varden were busy finding and destroying the remaining urgal forces.
