Current job openings:

We’re looking for a Cycle fan passionate about theorizing, dissecting, and discussing the series, who is interested in regularly contributing articles to our site! Dive into your favorite theory, spark and lead a conversation about a key scene from the series, and pick apart one of Christopher Paolini’s cryptic clues in your own article published on the front page for tens of thousands of fans to enjoy!

THE DETAILS:

This position requires 2-4 hours of work per week. You’ll conceive a topic and develop/write an article, which you’ll edit for grammar/spelling/overall composition and submit for publication on the website. You’ll then go through a round of edits with Mike before the article hits the web. We ask that you submit a minimum of one to two articles per month (more is great!).

These articles will be the heart and soul of Shur’tugal. Tens of thousands of fans visit the website each week in search of news and information about the series, and we’re aiming to provide even more of that in the form of regular theory and discussion articles.

Once your article goes live (with proper credit and attribution), you can join your fellow fans in the comments and on social media as they discuss and enjoy your work!

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR IN A CONTRIBUTOR:

An ideal individual for this position meets the following criteria:

  • Passion for the series, of course!
  • A strong command of the English language (spelling, grammar) and ability to self-edit
  • Produce articles that require little editing/revision
  • A creative mind and fun-to-read written voice
  • Ability to hit self-set deadlines
  • Ability to work independently with little oversight
  • Optional: Past experience writing (creative or otherwise)

It is essential that you be able to work in a timely fashion and without the need for micromanagement. Our team is available to chat and answer emails whenever you need, however, to ensure a smooth and efficient process, applicants must be able to work independently and meet self-set deadlines. Communication is key!

COMPENSATION/INCENTIVES:

Shur’tugal’s monthly costs exceed the little revenue we generate from advertisements, and because of this, we’ve established a tiered reward structure to compensate our writers! For every X amount of articles you contribute, you’ll earn rewards ranging from autographed Inheritance Cycle goodies and gift cards to signed copies of the books!

  • First article: Select autographed Inheritance Cycle goodies
  • Second article: Select autographed Inheritance Cycle goodies
  • Third article: Select autographed Inheritance Cycle goodies
  • Fifth article: $15 credit for the Shur’tugal Etsy store
  • Seventh article: $30 credit for the Shur’tugal Etsy store
  • Ninth article: Autographed copy of Inheritance
  • Ten and beyond: We’ll figure it out as we go! Lots more goodies, that’s for sure!

EDITORIAL EXAMPLES:

You may be wondering what kind of content you’ll be writing. Here’s just a few examples of ideas that have yet to be written! There are dozens more topics, theories, and discussions to explore!

Your work with Shur’tugal can be used on resumes and job applications! We’ve had a number of contributors successfully do so in the past.

We’re trying something new: abbreviated weekly news round-ups from fandoms outside of the Inheritance Cycle. To accomplish this, we’ll need a contributor keeping track of the week’s biggest fantasy/scifi news stories (books, movies, television) for a weekly round-up post featuring roughly one paragraph per story. Aside from keeping an eye on the news each day, this job will require 1-2 hours per week of writing.

If all goes well, we’ll be considering expanding into posting news stories as they happen as well as discussion posts for weekly episodes of popular fantasy shows and new films!

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR IN A CONTRIBUTOR:

Our new series of posts will be released on a weekly basis and will contain brief summaries of major news stories that we feel will appeal to the Inheritance Cycle audience (think Game of Thrones news, movie and video game announcements, etc.). Toward the end of each week, you’ll brainstorm with the site’s staff to determine which stories are worth including (anywhere from 5 to 10 total). From there, you’ll summarize each story in one paragraph.

We want this feature to be a reliable source of news round-ups for our visitors, which means we need to post the article consistently. We’ll need a contributor who can commit to getting this article written and published on time, set for a Saturday or Sunday release each week. We’re looking for someone who will be in this for the long haul (with breaks where needed, as long as they’re communicated ahead of time), so please be sure you’re ready for a commitment.

Specific criteria for the position:

  • An individual who regularly follows fantasy/scifi news about books, movies, television, and optionally (but ideally) video games
  • A strong command of the English language (spelling, grammar) and ability to self-edit
  • Ability to meet a weekly deadline (keeping our article release times consistent)
  • Produce articles that require little editing, revision
  • Optional: Past experience writing (creative or otherwise)

COMPENSATION/INCENTIVES:

Shur’tugal’s monthly costs exceed the little revenue we generate from advertisements, and because of this, we’ve established a tiered reward structure to compensate our writers! For every X amount of articles you contribute, you’ll earn rewards ranging from autographed Inheritance Cycle goodies and gift cards to signed copies of the books!

  • First month: Select autographed Inheritance Cycle goodies
  • Second month: Select autographed Inheritance Cycle goodies
  • Third month: Select autographed Inheritance Cycle goodies
  • Fourth month: $15 credit for the Shur’tugal Etsy store
  • Sixth month: $30 credit for the Shur’tugal Etsy store
  • Seventh month: Autographed copy of Inheritance
  • Eighth month and beyond: We’ll figure it out as we go! Lots more goodies, that’s for sure!

HOW TO APPLY:

We’re excited to hear from you! To apply, please email [email protected] with the subject “Fandom news contributor application”. Please write a brief introduction, including your age, country of residence, and any experience you have with writing. Additionally, tell us about how you follow the news, where you usually source that news (blogs, news sites, social media), and which media types (movies/TV/books/video games) you follow. Optionally, you can include a writing sample (which will speed up the process).

We’re looking to build the ultimate “library” for fans of the Inheritance Cycle in search of the next great read! To accomplish this, we’re pulling together a team of avid readers to recommend and review their favorite fantasy and science fiction books! As we grow, we’ll be able to request advance reader copies to enjoy and review the books before they’re released! Until then, we have dozens of free books for you to choose from!

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR IN A CONTRIBUTOR:

Any book reviewer who joins our team will be required to write at least one book review per month. The more the merrier, but we won’t pressure anyone to write more than they’re comfortable with, and we definitely don’t want to compromise quality for the sake of quantity!

It’s important that you enjoy the books you’re reading, as it’ll show in your reviews! We’re running a positive community and because of that, we aren’t looking to publish negative reviews. We are not asking you to lie and gush about every book you read. If you’ve read a book you consider “bad,” we’ll pass on reviewing it.

In addition to full length reviews, we’ll be initially building our library with basic, paragraph-long reviews and star ratings of books we’ve already read and can recommend to our audience. These will be fun side projects we work on in addition to our regular reviews.

Our specific requirements:

  • A frequent, passionate reader of fantasy and sci-fi books
  • A good command of the English language (spelling, grammar)
  • Produce articles that require little editing, revision
  • A creative mind and fun-to-read “voice”
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently, with little oversight
  • Optional: Past experience with writing (creative or otherwise) and/or reviewing

COMPENSATION/INCENTIVES:

Shur’tugal’s monthly costs exceed the little revenue we generate from advertisements, and because of this, we’ve established a tiered reward structure to compensate our writers in other ways: autographed Inheritance Cycle items, free Inheritance Cycle merchandise, and even autographed books! Our book reviewers also have access to dozens of brand new books in our collection. (At this time, physical book copies are only available to US residents.) Within the next few months, reviewers will also be able to request books for review before they’re published.

  • After your second review: Access to dozens of free books (for you to keep)!
  • First review: Select autographed Inheritance Cycle goodies
  • Second review: Select autographed Inheritance Cycle goodies
  • Fourth review: Select autographed Inheritance Cycle goodies
  • Sixth review: $15 credit for the Shur’tugal Etsy store
  • Ninth review: $30 credit for the Shur’tugal Etsy store
  • Eleventh review: Autographed copy of Inheritance

HOW TO APPLY:

We’re excited to hear from you! To apply, please email [email protected] with the subject “Book reviewer application”. Please write a brief introduction, including your age, country of residence, and any experience you have with writing and/or reviewing. Additionally, please include some information on how many books you read per month, books you’ve recently read and enjoyed, and books you think would make for great recommendations to our audience. Optionally, you can include a writing sample (which will speed up the process).

Your work with Shur’tugal can be used on resumes and job applications! We’ve had a number of contributors successfully do so in the past.

Christopher Paolini loves to answer questions online – so much so that we have a hard time keeping up! We’re looking for an enterprising fan who enjoys hunting through Christopher’s Twitter feed and other social media platforms for answers to fan questions, new information, and more!

THE DETAILS:

This job is a bit difficult to pin down required hours and deadlines. Christopher has an extensive history on Twitter and wading through thousands of tweets as you compile noteworthy ones will be quite the endeavor. However, it isn’t impossible: we’ve done it before and it’s quite fun to discover new secrets you may have missed along the way!

Twitter isn’t the only place Christopher is active. We’ll work together to pick through his Reddit AMAs (“Ask Me Anything” Q&A sessions) as well as Facebook Q&As and content on his personal website.

What will we do when we find relevant content? We’ll copy it into a document organized by category. For example, Book 5 related content will nest under Book 5, and we’ll also have categories for more general Cycle content, scifi book content, prequels, and more.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR IN A CONTRIBUTOR:

This is a great job for those who aren’t sure about writing articles for the site but still want to contribute and earn rewards for their work. We don’t know how long the job will take, but it should be fun and we’re looking forward to working with all who are interested!

Requirements:

  • Ability to work independently, with little oversight
  • Available time to put toward the project (ideally, we want to get this wrapped up as soon as possible)
  • Understanding of organization and ability to stick to it
  • Long-term commitment to see the project to completion

COMPENSATION/INCENTIVES:

Because of the uncertainty surrounding time required for this project, we don’t have a set reward structure in place. We’ll be able to “negotiate” as the project goes, and compensation rewards include autographed Inheritance Cycle goodies (art, photos, and more) as well as store credit for the Shur’tugal Etsy shop.

HOW TO APPLY:

We’re excited to hear from you! To apply, please email [email protected] with the subject “Researcher application”. Please write a brief introduction, including your age, country of residence, how much time you’ll be able to dedicate to the project on a weekly basis, and social media platforms you’re familiar with/active on. Things you may want to include (but are not required): how long you’ve been a fan, how long you’ve visited Shur’tugal, what you think you can bring to the team, and why this interests you.

Have questions? Email us at [email protected] and we’ll get back to you ASAP!
