HUMANS
Most of the known world of Alagaësia seems to be populated by humans. Despite the dominance, they are not a native race; only recently did they come to Alagaësia from across the sea. A group of twenty humans traveled to Alagaësia three hundred years after the formation of the Dragon Riders, roughly three thousand years from the present. They landed in Surda from unknown lands far south of Alagaësia.
The humans began adapting to the new continent almost immediately and lived mostly in peace. Here they first learned of the existence of dwarves, with whom they frequently traded with for many years before the dwarves isolated themselves. After this, part of the original group of settlers traveled northwest and began to settle in an area of isolated land.
After two thousand years, the then-current king of the humans, King Palancar, arrived in Alagaësia. He and his followers arrived in a valley later named after him - Palancar Valley. Palancar, desiring to expand his land's borders, fought against the elves for control over Du Weldenvarden on three separate occasions and lost each time. In secret, a group of human lords brought a treaty to the elves proposing peace. The elves agreed and Palancar was usurped and banished, but he, his family, and his vassals refused to leave the Valley.
To prevent Palancar from attacking anyone or rising to power again, the current Riders constructed the watchtower Edoc'sil (later known as Ristvak'baen) on Utgard Mountain, to watch over Palancar. Eventually, one of Palancar's sons killed his father and usurped the throne. This led to assassination, betrayal, and other such things in Palancar's house, reducing Palancar's once mighty state into a mere shadow of its old self.
Today, humans make up an integral part of the Varden, an alliance of humans and dwarves who resist Galbatorix's rule. Surda is also a human kingdom that aids the Varden but is threatened by the Empire. The Empire is the largest known kingdom of humans, spanning across the majority of the known parts of Alagaësia.
