I thought Galby couldn’t know his true name because it would be so terrible it would kill him or he would go mad. didn’t it say that in Brisingr at one point?

  • Manurocks1945

can anyone tell me what are these official episodes

  • Sherry B

I wonder if the vault of souls is a place for the souls of the riders who’s eldunari  have been kept.

  • I thought of Helen’s theory before, but I have to disagree with it right now. I mean it’s VERY cool, but I don’t know… I’ve just never wanted Roran to use magic.

  • I wonder if the word “scrying” actually came from “skypeing”? LOL

    ~Waleed K~

    • Sherry B

Scrying has been around for hundreds of years.  I wonder if Skypeing may have come from Scrying

  • Roran and Eragon’s little “guy conversation” about girls reminded me of how my uncle questioned me that way once xD but I felt very sorry for Eragon here because he seems to have just as much difficulty finding a mate as Saphira.

  • Best intro Chris has had so far 😛

  • Schoey

You mention in the podcast that Big Twenty is gunna be released on Monday’s? Were is it? I’ve been hanging out for it for three days now. haha 😉

  • Coasterking

does anyone out there know where i can get a copy of eragon that christopher and his family published that wont cost me close to $2,000

    • I don’t even own one!  They’re hard to find for less than 1500

      • Coasterking

        that makes me feel better

I have to disagree with your interpretation of Eragon’s feelings reguarding war and death. I don’t think that he is getting lost in the joy of killing; on the contrary, it makes me think he may be developing Post Traumatic Stress from the fighting he is involved in, after all he is still only around 17 or 18. To me it seems like Roran is more comfortable with killing out of the two, though he hates it too.

are you guys still planing on having a brisinigr replica made for christopher? would love to see that.

  • bigmike

Is that your new official title now Chris?

    • Nope.  I can’t remember any of it.  Much too long!

      • bigmike

AWE. To bad. I was especially fond of the “Conveyor of Yals” part. Cause I talk like that as well. I say you should get a name tag for it. That would be EPIC walking around in waliworld wearing it or something and be all like ” Yeah, I know Im Beast.”  😛

about the ra’zac – I didn’t care when they died but looking at it from a moral point of view… humans are their food source just as some animals are for humans (non-riders). Does this really make them evil or does it just give humans a reason to hate/fear them? In my view, their killing is justified in self-defense / to save other human lives in the future but I would not call them evil.

    • bigmike

Them eating the humans isnt evil, them killing the humans just for the fun of it.

      • juss a guess

well there are some people that kill animals for fun, is that evil to?

  • Kek73

This is regarding the comment ~ 46 minutes that someone should have been able to fully heal Murtagh’s back wound. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that the wound was dealt by Zar’roc. It seems that the rider’s swords usually had magical effects imbued in them. The sword named misery may have dealt wounds that never fully heal… just a thought.

I listen to the podcasts at work most of the time and for some reason “It’s Shurty” stuck itself in my brain this morning. I was walking around talking to the dogs (I work at a shelter) going “Iiiiiiiit’s Shuuuuuurty!” I think everyone thought I was nuts.

I love the audiobooks.  I got my dad into the series by letting him listen to my audiobooks.

  • Footballjim81

ive reread Eldest and I think i might have figured something important
Blagden said to Eragon  on page 545
    By Beak and Bone

    Mine Blackened Stone
    See Rooks and crooks
    And Bloody Brooks
i belive its refering to a couple of things
By Beak and Bone and this the razack

Mine Blackened Stone i believe this is referring to Helegrind

See Rooks and crooks i belive this is refering to  a Rook ( like a CASTLE in chess ) to a passageway to the CASTLE in Uru Baen. or the Vault of Sauls and a crook being a robber like how brom was a crook stole saphiras egg

And Bloody Brooks idk but Im thinking its some sort of blood bath wich in the end can result in the Varden finding the final dragon egg

    • Footballjim81

some how and someway these are all related I think and theres possibly some tunnel in Helegrind that can lead to the castle idk what but I think this a riddle put in by a riddle master in Blagden and another thing im thinking of is y he shriekes wyrda all the time

    • AryaRose

Love the theory!! Can’t wait to see if it comes to anything in book 4 XD

I had a dream last night and Nasuade appeared before me, well…it was a ladt who I imagined to be Nasuada, and she proclaimed herself as the next rider. (My mind then boggled.) This doesn’t really have anything to do with the podcast, but I thought it was worth sharing. Maybe I’m looking forward to book 4 a bit ‘too’ much. That, or I need to cut down on the coffee. It’s not even good coffee.

    • Me

Ha ha nice one. I had a dream where I read a summary of Inheritance… It involved some weird plot twists that didn’t make any sense, but ended with Galbatorix getting crushed by a mountain.

      • Anonymous

Crushed by Utgard mountain? Now that would be fitting 😉

    • I love reading!!

I had a weird dream where greeni hatched for Eragon, so that he had 2 dragons.

      • Anonymous

I also had one of those dreams. but it was bizarre. eragon and Arya had gotten the green egg, and they were both flying. Eragon was on Saphira and Arya was in a helicopter, they were tossing the egg back and forth while Galbatorix was chasing them.

did Galby stop to tie his boots and one of them miss the egg just above Galbi, the egg falls toward him and just before it reaches him, he looks up in time to get smacked in the face with it? cause i saw something like that in my dream…….

There is no such thing as anticipating book 4 too much. I mean it’s been 3 years since Brisingr

      • Anonymous

        That’s a good point! 🙂

  • Gabe C.B

Okay I agree that Murtagh isn’t responsible for what has happened to him, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a selfish bastard.  He would rather a thousand die before he or thorn suffer a scratch.  In Eragon he executed a man that shouldn’t have died.  He might not have wanted to become an all powerful monster, but he certainly isn’t sad that it happened…

    • juss a guess

you should consider that he didnt have a great childhood, maybe thats why he is the way he is, is kill or get killed in other words he has been forced to fight for his survival since he was born.

  • Kova

I know the reasons for islanzadi’s death have been discussed, and I don’t know if this has been mentioned, but I think her dying would show some needed insight into arya’s character.

Also, with eragon’s moral quandary about killing Sloan, and your mention of Harry potter, it reminded me of a line from book 7, something like, “we are fighting against the man who blasts people out of his way when they are of an inconvenience to him,” and I thought that Eragon did the right thing in not killing Sloan, but the correct reason was never addressed in the book.

    Hey Mike,

everyone needs to talk more about ‘Doctor Who’, I’m missing those awesome tangents from the podcasts.

In the UK, Episode 11 of Series 6 was shown on Saturday. Personally I preferred Series 5. However, this series is still better than Series 3 and 4, although several leagues behind 1 and 2.

    Got to love Doctor Who!

(PS. Tortchwood Series 4 was tepid, Series 2 and 3 were good though) 🙂

    • Bah, your blasphemy is not welcome here :/

  • A half page summary, and yet this is the longest podcast so far… Gawd, Helen, you talk too much!

  • Claire14

OH MY GOSH!! They read out my comment!!!! AHHHHH!!!! 🙂 I am sick so that just made me feel so much better!!

  • Fairth

Can someone that doesn’t have the ability to use magic figure out a true name?  It would make sense that they could because it looks like what it takes is to learn a lot about the subject of the search.

As a side note, wouldn’t it be much more difficult to find the true name of a living being than it would an object or a language?
The Ancient Language is different because it is tied to magic, but to learn the true name of a thing (object, language, etc.) you would need to know a general history of it (from which would learn its purpose and other things).  A being, on the other hand, has much more depth than that.  How is that being on an emotional level?  What does the being know?  Any religious beliefs?  And most importantly, what motivates the being to do what he/she does?

    -Fairth

    • Comett

I don’t imagine you need to be a magic-user to find a true name – but you need to have magical skill to use it in any way.  I would guess that the majority of non-magicians wouldn’t understand the concept of a true name.  Perhaps someone a little more in the know, like Jeod or even Roran, would have an okay shot at it though.

And thinking about the complexity of finding the true name of a human vs and object is interesting.  I would have thought, at first glance, that finding the TN of a human (or living being) would be more difficult.  But objects don’t have histories, personalities, intentions… objects are just there, and they serve a function.  So perhaps it varies.  Makes you wonder how the name of everything was found originally haha.

    • AryaRose

I’m not so sure that only a knowledge of the general history of a language would be enough to discover it’s true name, at least not on its own.  Languages are always changing and adapting and branching off into other dialects and such.  Words that meant one thing in Shakespeare’s time mean something completely different now.  While I don’t know if the Ancient Language changes like this I imagine that it’s identity is somehow affected by the intentions and of those who use it both for communication and magic.  Of course I could also be totally off. Only Christopher knows 🙂

  • Guest

I want to see the Chris’s summary! Can you post it in the comments?

    • I guess I could post it (enjoy!):

Brisingr starts a couple of days where we left off, scoping out the ra’zac lair

Terrible self-mutilation is witnessed as another form of religion in Alagaesia.

Eragon now using a staff after ra’zac was stolen

Saphira gave ultimatum to Nasuada about letting Eragon attack the ra’zac. 14

Roran and Eragon discuss the killing of other men, whether or not it troubles them

Eragon begins to teach Roran how to use magic!

Eragon and Roran discuss their relationships with their womensss

      They compare bruises (lol)

Roran tries to get Eragon to eat meat

They suit up for the assault on helgrind! (Roran holding his hammer behind Eragon on saphira)

      Hidden entrance to helgrind

      The ra’zac get jacked up

Sloan (!) and Katrina are found in the lair

Torkenbrand brought back up. I like.

Eragon sends away saphira, Katrina, and roran to go deal with last ra’zac and sloan

Ra’zac says “No. If I fall to your staff, let Galbatorix deal with you as he will. He has more heartsss than you do”

P 65. “He has almost found the name. Big theory

He kills him. His race is done forever(????? Theory anyone)

Bring sloan down mountain using magic.

      End part 1 of brisingr

      • Anchal Jain

Lol – “Eragon now using staff after ra’zac was stolen.”

        I feel like he meant zar’roc 😛

        • Yep.  I read that and was like…hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

  • Sara Francis

I recall reading an interview with Chirstaphor that if Murtagh was ever given  contridicting oders that ‘smoke would come out of his ears and then he would explode.’

Also  about the name of dragon theory. if it was the name of the dragon leader at the time of the pact, then his name mighthave an influence over the pact between the Dragons and Elves. If that were the case I could see the apeal to the psychopathic King.

  • Tim G.

Does anyone else feel like if Roran uses magic to stop the falling wall it would utterly destroy his character? He’s so epic for the very reason that he does what he does WITHOUT magic.

    • Anchal Jain

It is possible that it could be a spur-of-the-moment thing, purely out of his desperation. I wouldn’t be surprised if he would never be able to do magic again in the future (unless maybe there was a similarly urgent situation).

      • Fairth

I don’t think that this theroy is very likely.  That said, I love the idea of having someone in the book that can use magic that takes energy from wild magic but can only use that magic in in desperate (aka wild) moments rather than at will.  This would be a great way to give Roran magic without giving up what makes him so cool.

        • Helen Beddis

I imagined it one of two ways, either he does it then but can never do magic again or he learns a little bit as a back up but doesn’t use it regularly, a bit like how he can fight with a sword and use a bow but chooses to use his familiar hammer.

          • Meh, one of the reasons Roran is so badass is because he doesn’t use magic. We have very few characters now who cannot use magic, and I’m kinda hoping it stays that way. Or, perhaps those iconic seven words Brom said that Mike loves so much were “Don’t let that wall fall on Roran”, and this is the perfect time to use that particular spell 😛

          • Me

That would require a tremendous amount of foresight… but be really awesome. 😛

          • JustPlainEric

Brom always did have a tremendous amount of foresight… 😛

          • BlueBiscuit

Just had a crazy thought. What if Vrom’s 7 words are Galby’s true name. He could have know he was dying and said it anyway and maybe he has uncursed them somehow by dying before the spell killed him.

      • AryaRose

I totally get where you’re coming from Tim G.  I think though that maybe if he does use magic to save himself in that situation from the excerpt that he may prefer not to use magic again.  Just based on my perception of his personality, he strikes me as one who may be a little weireded out by the concept of magic to some degree and would prefer to accomplish things by his own hands and not through the use of a spell

  • Anchal Jain

Helen’s theory about the stone-moving spell and the falling wall totally blew my mind! It sounds totally brilliant and I am excited to see if it’s true or not. Nice thinking Helen, as usual!

    • Helen Beddis

      Thanks! 🙂

  • XxxX

    Nasuada is gonna die!!!

  • XxxX

    Big Twenty on Nasuada!!!!!!

  • Lil Uhura

Just a thought here Mike, but it could be possible that Galbatorix is looking for the name of the ancient dragon leader because he has his eldunari in his hoard and hasn’t broken him yet.  As an ancient being he would be a far more formidable opponent than most dragons, plus there’s also the additional hurdle of no one actually knowing his name in any language save for that of the dragons.

    • AvaAnnaZ

I love your name!! I presume that you’re a trekkie like me. 🙂

      • Lil Uhura

Oh yeah!!  Lil’ Uhura was originally the name of my cat.  She was neglected and abused by her previous owner, so I wanted to give her a name that really meant something positive.

I wonder if murtagh has ever considered that his best friend, tornac, gave his life so murtagh could be free of empire, maybe murtagh will try to escape in his name.

my sister through out sweepstakes words after episode 6, had to re-listen to all the episodes, lol, not that that was a bad thing.

  • bromandsaphira

can i just say that it is SO COOL that we have fan guests on the podcast?! SOOO amazing! wow. this really just proves how amazing all of you guys are…wow. thanks for making the long wait for book 4 so fun and exciting. Helen B, must admit, I am a little envious, but I’m really happy that you’re on this podcast! so awesome!

  • Aplussoccerkid

What is VOS is all of Galby’s eldunari. That would be a twist.

  • Coasterking

just sent an awsome email for you guys for next week hope you like it u better i put a lot of thought into it

Izlandzadi definately survives in book four because in Eragon’s guide to alagaesia, he talks about her in present tense.

    • Coasterking

did not catch that what part is this happen in?

      • Rebekka

I have a good feeling that Arya will die. Eragon is so obsessed with her, and I doubt that Arya will ever grow to love him, so I think that for Eragon to get over Arya, she would need to die.
Another thought that I had was what if the true name that Galby is looking for is the true name of the dragon race?

    • Well that blows a huge hole in their theory…

And notches another check next to Helen’s!

  • Victor

i don’t think roran survives due to using magic himself. a whole wall collapses on him so the energy needed to protect himself would kill him anyway. i think someone else might push him away or pull him out using magic themselves.

    • daniel

he doesnt need to suspend the wall in mid-air. just slow it down enough not to crush him to death. he probably will be injured but eragon was very close so he could heal instantly.. Or- just thought of this- he senses that roran is casting a spell which is draining energy, transfers energy into roran keeping him from dieing.

  • Coasterking

why was there no sweepstakes word?

    • Anonymous

      There was.

      • Coasterking

i did find it thanks though

        • Hahaha, don’t scare me like that.

          • Coasterking

fell asleep listining to this the first time so i missed it and then thought it was omited. so for the scare

          • Man, even I got scared for a second there..

My favorite section of this reading was when Roran and Eragon were showing off their scars. Every time I read that, I burst out laughing. I love it so much.

  • Cste95Guitar

In answer to Lauren the reason Galbatorix was able to guess Murtagh’s true name after him being away was because galby broke into his mind and examined all his memories. Murtagh tells Eragon this when they meet again.

  • AvaAnnaZ

hey helen, just listened to the podcast and was intrigued by your theory about roran using magic, mainly the part where u said we know roran survives cos hes in the king cat chapter, but i jst re read it and there is no mention of roran in there?

      • Helen Beddis

        Hi Hazza

I’ve just double checked my facts and Roran is standing next to Angela during the King Cat chapter.

        • Anonymous

iim sitting here laughin my head off now, jst looked at it again n seen it, right there in black n white, right in front of me lol, feel rather dippy now seein i read it 3 times jst to see if roran was mentioned n completely missed that, so i stand corrected n thank u for correctin me, stil the wanderin bout islanzadi tho

          • Helen Beddis

I didn’t mention Islanzadi dying because I don’t think she will.

          • Anonymous

no u didnt but the others did lol, i here u may be goin to bath to see c.p, im also thinkin of going seein that i live in devon

          • I, for one, think Thorn will die and that will have a profound affect on Murtagh’s mind and it will change his true name and release him. (Then it’ll be up to him to decide if he wants to help.)

          • Helen Beddis

Bob I fear you may be right but I hope not, I want them both to escape Galby’s evil enslavement unscathed.

          • Anonymous

i think that they will change there true names and escape and in realising that he is losin his hold galby, havin thorns eldunari will destroy it leavin murtagh to be the man lonely on the shore in eragons premonition

          • Daniela

No way! Kill Murtagh, if there is no other way, but not Thorn 🙁 *sob*

  • Anchal Jain

I used to love Murtagh, but I really have a hard time liking him now after how he has responded to his fate. At the end of the day he enjoys his power, more than he dislikes doing evil things. We see this when he senselessly kills Hrothgar, and also when he blatantly rejects the idea of killing himself.

You can add me to the list of people who don’t like Murtagh (anymore).

  • hoke
