Exclusive Interview with Christopher Paolini: Book 4 Revelations, Major Character Fate Changes, Hidden Titles, Shades, Werecats, and More…

Lytherus.com, sister website of Shur’tugal, has officially released part one of our interview with Christopher Paolini! We sat down for an extensive and exclusive interview with Inheritance Cycle author Christopher Paolini for his first fan-oriented interview since announcing the title and release date of the hugely-anticipated INHERITANCE (Book 4). The first part of our interview is jam-packed with information hinting at or impacting what we will learn in Book 4!

In part one of our interview, Christopher talks naming his final novel and hints that the name we see now was not his original choice; we learn that humans may not be all that they appear to be, at least compared to our view of humans; Book 4 will not need an epilogue, but he has not ruled out the idea of epilogue for a Deluxe Edition; details on one of Christopher’s favorite scenes cut from Book 4; the fates of several major characters have been completely changed from Christopher’s original outline; Christopher talks what he’d choose if he was forced to re-design each cover, revealing some very interesting information; lots of Shade back story and clarifications on werecats and spirits; gedwey ignasias… and more!

This is an interview you don’t want to miss — it’s one of our best interviews with Christopher Paolini to date!

I’m just wondering what will happen with Elva …

and if in the first book angela told to eragon that he will be gone fro alagaesia for ever what will happen ??

if someone have ideias please tell me

    • Sallystar6of7

i think that the couple leaving on the boat in eragon’s dream are him and his girlfriend (whether its arya or the girl angela had him bless i can’t decide) and the 2 dragons are greeni and saphira, with murtag alone on the beach (thorn has died).
who do you think the girl and the woman who eragon blessed are? i was thinking maybe selena and galby’s daughter, who just recently escaped from him. Any thoughts?

      • Márcia Louro

it would be very unlikely that galby has a daughter . and the most likely thing it’s that arya can’t resist more to eragon and they stay together . and thorn can’t die either because that would be really sad and murtagh will be really angry and crazy about that .

        • Sallystar6of7

but some one has to die and chris was attatched to that person.
maybe thorn will die helping elva to killing galby, or they both will die.

    • Sallystar6of7

i also think elva will kill galby.

  • js9627

I still think the person who is going to die is Katrina. Nobody is talking about the fact that Brigit threaten to have vengence on Roran for the role he played in her husbands death. Now does this mean she will make an attempt on Roran’s life or his loving with Katrina. I hope it doesn’t happen and my theory might not hold water but the threat is there

    • Sallystar6of7

But she wouldn’t kill Katrina if she knew she was pregnant I don’t think, and they will have to announce that she is soon!

    • The_White_Rider

No chance. In case you forgot, Birgit stood in for Katrina’s mother at their wedding, she clearly cares about her at least to some degree. If Birgit does finally claim her vengeance, it will be on Roran in some other way.

With that said, it’s feasible that Katrina could die another way, maybe in childbirth or something.

  • Sallystar6of7

So excited for book 4!!!!!! I really hope the person who dies isn’t Arya or Murtag! My guess is that it is the elf queen Islanzadi. Anyone?

    • Márcia Louro

i totally agree with you ! because if islanzadi dies arya will be the next queen and that will be awesome . but christopher told in an interview that will be someone that he really liked when he was writting the books soo it’s probable that will be angela  . he always liked her

      • Sallystar6of7

That would be sad! Maybe it is Angela, but she is dripping with mystery. So she probably can’t die till twards the end. I wonder who the old guy in the tower is, I think Chris said he was going to come back in 4.

        • Márcia Louro

I’m just praying that neither saphira nor eragon died . it would be really sad i’ve one of them in the fight against galby and soo the other was really angry and soo kill galby . But I do not want the Roran or Katrina, or Nasuada, Murtagh or Arya or his dragon thorn die. would be very sad .

          • Sallystar6of7

yes it would, but some who has to die and i think that it will be roran or islanzadi. and roran has a way of dying in the 1st chapter.

          • Márcia Louro

I already throught about roran in chapter 1 . and I was thinking that probably in finally can use the spell that eragon teach him .  and yesterday I saw a interview and chris told that it’s possible that more than one characters die :s

          • Sallystar6of7

i never really thought about roran finally using magic like that, i guess since the words that eragon was teaching him does lift rocks. i hope he can lift the wall and save himself.

          • Márcia Louro

            yeah , me too 🙂

          • Sallystar6of7

but what if roran did die, what would become of trina and the baby, would birgit take her revenge out on trina or would everything be honky-dory?

          • Márcia Louro

Yeah , I’m a little worry about Birgit revenge too . I have no idea to aspect of that .

But Roran doesn’t die in this because a time ago it was release a chapter of the book called “King Cat” in it was something like this written on “right on side of roran was angela” or something like that :s . soo roran can’t die in the chapter 1 😀

          • Sallystar6of7

o my gosh i totaly missed that! how could i have missed that?????????? so happy that he didn’t!

          • Márcia Louro

a first it I miss this too but then I remember
            bue yeah , i’m also happy .

          • Sallystar6of7

            u r awesome!

          • Sallystar6of7

            u r awesome!

Talking about the Shades and spirits… I was listening to Eragon audiobook today and this scene slapped me right to my face. It’s right after Saphira hatches:

“Something brushed against his consciousness, like a finger trailing over
his skin. He felt it again, but this time it solidified into a tendril
of thought through which he could feel a growing curiosity. It was as if
an invisible wall surrounding his thoughts had fallen away, and he was
now free to reach out with his mind. He was afraid that without anything
to hold him back, he would float out of his body and be unable to
return, becoming a spirit of the ether.”

Could it be a hint to what spirits really are?

    • bigmike

It was probly a way of showing his ignorance of the subject. Because he has gone out of his body plenty of times.

  • Samuel

Hey mike could you in the next interview ask these questions.
1.Will we here more about Saphira’s parents in book 4.
2.Was there any hints in the first 3 books about who is the next rider.

(P.S. if they’ve been in before interviews please tell me.)

  • Coasterking

do we know the official page count yet cause i see 2 diffrent numbers floating around the internet

    • Samuel

      I think it’s 808

      • Coasterking

that seems to be the most consistent but christofer said it would not be longer then eldest which is 740

    • Samuel

      I think it’s 808

  • Coasterking

    wheres the big 20?

  • The Green dragon

I actually thought that I had a hood theory that had to dovish brom’s seven words that might have been on the show, but I guess nit cus mike doesn’t think that the words meant anything important. Oh well.

    • The Green dragon

      *good *do with *not

    • Mcase19

i always tgought his seven words were just useful spells, nothing overly important except that he was a teacher for eragon until the end

  • Monty Burn

For the diferrent eyes color then the scales of greeni’s maybe i’ve got a solution but it’s a little bit wild … What if they put Glaedr eldunari’s in a wild dragon with his permission
(I not sure if a wild dragon have a eldunari cause they not bond with
magic so :S)  and after they do it the dragon soul of Glaedr comes first
and the eyes of the wild dragon became the same color as Glaedr … not
    a bad idea

    • Anonymous

That would be cool, but it says in the books that once an eldunari is out of the body, they can’t put it back

    • bigmike

Glaedr sais that the wild dragons left their eldunari with the riders after the riders formed. so that means that they have them.

    • bigmike

Glaedr sais that the wild dragons left their eldunari with the riders after the riders formed. so that means that they have them.

    • Sallystar6of7

I think that greeni is glaedr’s kid, and thats why he has gold eyes.

    • Sallystar6of7

I think that greeni is glaedr’s kid, and thats why he has gold eyes.

  • Person

They eyes of the green dragon are gold. And the older a dragon, the stronger the eldunari. What if Glaedr’s elunari somehow “merges” into Greeni’s? This way maybe he would be able to age more quickly (like Thorn) and participate in the battle with full power even though he hatched a few months ago….

    • Fayt

Like Quad412 said just above, once it’s out you cannot put it back …
And – just my wild guess – every dragon dragon already has an Eldunari so what would happen if you add one ??
      – Here is my theory : the strongest one take control so, as you know, Glaedr is old and powerfull. This would mean that Greeni’s personnality would just be erased. So in the end,the green dragon – as it was supposed to be (himself) – would just be an empty shell/ cease to exist …

That apart : I REALLY don’t think someone like Glaedr would accept to be controlled by someone who is not Oromis ( remember that dragons are prideful ).

But I liked that theory !

      • Anonymous

yeah he wouldn’t want a new bond with such strange rider. And plus, why would chris do that? I mean, it’s almost cruel.

        • Mcase19

yeah that seems a bit….. canibbalistic to be condoned by one of the good guys. maybe galbatorix could do that with shruikan, but otherwise, i dont see it happening

  • Rubydragon

Hey Mike, can you ask CP if we can get a glimpse of Murtagh’s POV in Inheritance?
By the way, the interview gave me some more things to think about prior to Book 4. Thanks.

  • Rubydragon

Hey Mike, can you ask CP if we can get a glimpse of Murtagh’s POV in Inheritance?
By the way, the interview gave me some more things to think about prior to Book 4. Thanks.

    • He won’t tell us.  Already tried

    • Guesting

CP said that there won’t be one.  Looks like we’re stuck with more boring Nasuada and annoying Roran ones.  Go to the RandomBuzzers twitter and scroll down to June 1st to see the question, but it went something like:
Q: Will the next book have more Murtaghs & Thorn’s view?
A: Not their viewpoints exactly, but you’ll see a lot more of them!

  • That was great! It seems like the new Rider will be active during Book 4 if CP would put his/her sword on the front! Great news.

Also, just because it might be a green sword doesn’t mean it’s Tamerlein. Remember that Eragon found gobs of brightsteel, so Rhunon is set to make a new one.

    • Johnsmith

That is true, but Tamerlein and Arvindr are the only rider swords left that is not currently used. (And there is not a lot of information about Arvindr).

However, Tamerlein is described in great detail (green sword, topped with an emerald, held by a large person that can use a two handed sword). Why would Paolini mention all those things about this sword if he isn’t going to use the sword later? You should remember that Paolini is the type of writer that likes to put little clues throughout his books that reveals big things later on (like the Eldunari).

Also, I think that the “gobs” of brightsteel will be used later for future dragon riders (that will come after the green one).

P.S. – My new favorite word of the day is now “gobs”

      • iLoveDragons

“Held by a large person…” Oh my gosh! Maybe its a clue that Roran, who is fairly large, will be the next rider…? 😀

        • Emily Sasaki

No. Just no. That is not happening, especially since he has Katrina and his child to look after, how will that even work if he is immortal. And plus, I think that is too much, since Eragon and Roran are related to each other. I think that Roran becoming King of Alagaesia is much more likely than that. and plus, he fights with a regular old hammer… Just sayin…

          • nartin

You have to admit though.  They are pretty much a family of Dragon riders. Brom and Eragon… Morzan and Murtagh… I doubt it’ll happen but I wouldn’t put it past him.

          • Mr-x

I think it’s mainly everyone just wants roran to be a dragonrider but i don’t think it would suit him his destined to be king in my opinion i think tamerlein will goto the young girl who was with the woman who had her fortune told by angela since she was described as having the arms of a blacksmith

          • aj

actually chris said that the new dragon rider have been in all three books she hasnt

      • iLoveDragons

“Held by a large person…” Oh my gosh! Maybe its a clue that Roran, who is fairly large, will be the next rider…? 😀

      • TheWindsWhisper

The sword was described it in such detail so that the reader would know that it was the wrong sword for Eragon.

And while were on the subject of Tamerlein, it is implied that Arva, Tamerlein’s original owner, fought somewhat like a berserker, while Eragon was trained with more elegant techniques. If elves are referred to as the fair folk why would an elf, that is also a dragon rider no less, fight using such sloppy techniques?

      • Mr-x

If we think of it in that sense then i dont think arya or roran will be greeni’s rider because neither of them would use tamerlein because it doesnt suit either of them therefore i believe its the young girl who was with wolf eyes or bladesinger which ever you prefer because as it says she had the arms of a blacksmith which would surely suit the two handed tamerlein

  • Feisty-fitz

That was a friggin awesome interview Mike! I’m so keyed up now i can’t go to sleep! You’re the reason i’ll be falling asleep in college tomorrow! EEEEEK!

    • Matt

Coffee coffee and more coffee. I take a giant cup with me to every class.

  • johnsmith

-Hi everyone! So I just finished reading “The Inheritance Almanac” and it raised a few questions. Hopefully, someone can answer them for me.

    1) Is Oromis “The Morning Sage” (p136)  or is he “The Mourning Sage” (p148)? Which one is it?

    2) What is up with Blagden the Raven? Blagden saved Elf King Evandar’s life by attacking an Urgal, so Evandar gave him intelligence and an extended life span. But before these gifts were given to him, Blagden was just a normal raven. Why would Blagden (who was just a normal raven) try to save Evandar’s life? Wouldn’t a normal raven just fly around, look for food, build a nest, etc…?

    3) There is a green dragon rider sword, called Tamerlein (that no one is currently using). This sword is meant for someone who is large in size and used to wielding a big sword with two hands. After finding out that a green dragon will appear in the fourth book, doesn’t anyone else think that the next dragon rider is someone who is quite large and can wield a sword with two hands?

Eragon = Saphira 2 (blue dragon) = Brisingr (blue sword)
Brom = Saphira 1 (blue dragon) = Undbitr (blue sword)
Murtagh = Thorn (red dragon) = Zar’roc (red sword)
Oromis = Glaedr (gold dragon) = Naegling (gold sword)
    ? = ? (green dragon) = Tamerlein (green sword)

    4) From other sources, people talk about some kind of “shadow” that will be the next evil of Alagaesia. Does anyone else think that this “shadow” will come from The Spine? I mean that King Palancar ruled near The Spine, and he suddenly went mad and started a war. And Galbatorix suddenly went mad in The Spine after his dragon died, and then he started a war (and you should remember that other riders have lost their dragons and they didn’t go mad). So will this “shadow” come from The Spine, and possibly turn someone else evil?

    • Rbnguevara

King Evandar had a Passion for singing to birds and would touch there minds this one was probably aware of the danger he was in and attacked to help. It’s not unlikely that the king had touched the ravens mind prior to his engagement.

    • The_White_Rider

Oromis is the Mourning Sage. This is because he is the last scion of the Elder Riders, and although he continued to live on, he was constantly mourning his lost compatriots.

it’s interesting what you said about The Spine. It’s quite possible given the evidences. nice catch. perhaps we will get some answers in the second part of the interview regarding those mountains.

  • bigmike

CP said that he believed that Galby had control over Durza. This leads me to believe that either Galby is stronger then we have given him credit for (which is a lot already) or that there is someone more powerful then him really pulling the strings.I say that that puppet master is the Shade that taught Galby before he killed the Elder. Why would a Shade teach dark secrects to a young rider unless he was using him as a tool and a puppet to do his bidding and just gave him a few tricks to keep him alive. If the Shade is the real villian, then it would explain why Galby went into solitary for a time (to learn more from his master) and what the true name he is searching for could be (the Shades true name) to free himself from a name bound slavery. Just my theory. Change it if you find flaws.

    • Skisbej

I bet his “master” is the red eyed Shade rabbit lol

      • bigmike

😮 i never thought of that!!!!!!!! and angela barely excaped with her life.lol

        • Or maybe it’ll be like *shockhorror* Tenga is the man behind the curtain! I would be seriously annoyed if Eragon had Galbatorix at his mercy and then Tenga shows up and says, “so I see you defeated my minion, Rider.” ARGH.

      • Anonymous

I totally forgot that. How could I forget the red-eyed rabbit? At first I thought this was some sort of new creature, since Chris said that we’re gonna see some new species in the fourth book, but this is an interesting thought. Matched with this theory about Galby being barely a puppet, enslaved by a much more powerful being.

    • Mr-x

How do we know it wasn’t durza who taught galby these shade tricks? you’ve got to remember that he would have known these dark magics but perhaps you already needed to have had a bond with a dragon before you could bond one to your will? like you need a Gidwey ignasia to act as a control mechanism if you get what i mean? plus who could expect galbatorix exceptional rider as he may have been to rise to such a height of power?

  • Horsegal4ever

I was really beginning to get ticked that it wasn’t up here yet! I had a question and want to know the answer! And still, I have to wait for part 2 to see if it’s answered there! freaking out . . .
But OMGSH it’s awesome! I loved all the new info! Thanks Mike! Thanks Chris! Thanks all y’all behind the scenes! 😀

  • Mazumdarsourav

I wonder if the golden eye thing christopher mentions has to do with elven bonding!! Maybe when dragons PAIR up with elves they get the golden eye thing prob. cuz they are a race of magic and in that way their magic affects dragons in a similar way dragons affect human rider…(read eldest)
Murtagh and eragon( was) a human rider and both their dragons are described with red and sapphire eyes respectively!!

The golden eye i am pretty sure has to do with elven bonding…because glaedr himself was a gold dragon we cant be sure!!
    Please comment on theory! 🙂

    • Emily Sasaki

I don’t think that’s right, because why would elven bonding be different than humans? They are both part of the same pact together, not a separate, modified version for elves. I believe the golden eyes are just golden eyes. Nothing special. just think, do you think Shruikan has black eyes? No, i see them as red or purple. Some creepy color. NOt sayin that purple is creep, just with black… So no, its probably just the way he is.

      • Mazumdarsourav

True u must remember that elves are a race of magic! Their blood runs with magic and this was wayy before they paired with dragons!
Humans were ordinary…i dont think they affected dragons in any way..
Besides this just a theory..christopher hinted theres a reason why the green dragon have gold eyes….
I think its of importance otherwise CP wouldnt have kept that info. To himself!

        • Mazumdarsourav

Another thing with shrukien i dont galby’s evil nature would have affected hos dragons eyes

    • Mr-x

I agree with the whole magical bond theory you’ve got to realise the the combination of two magical races is going to have some adverse effects on both of them

    • Mr-x

I agree with the whole magical bond theory you’ve got to realise the the combination of two magical races is going to have some adverse effects on both of them

  • What I’ve always wondered, and I’m not sure if it’s in the books or not, is what race the name “Alagaesia” comes from? It sounds like an elven word, but if it is, what did the dwarves and other races call it before the elves came? I’m pretty sure the humans, dwarves, and elves use the same word, and if so, what do the Urgals call it? Anyway, amazing interview, can’t wait for the next part/s!!!

    • Anonymous

i think it sounds more like a dwarven word. and I believe that The Urgals have a way far different to call the land. They seem to be wilder, their language more rustic.

FAIL. And that’s the karma you get for being silly enough to go “first!” like you’re still in kindergarten or something >:(

I just want to be the first comment.

Seriously? An interview that’s this awesome and all you can do is whine about not being the first to comment?

      • Wwrestler92

who whined? not me. However, you did about my comment. An interview this awesome all you can do is whine about other peoples meaningless comments? I actually loved the interview in case you were wondering

        • bella ♥ vita

I was simply curious and politely asking a question, but if you want to cop an attitude about it then knock yourself out. Hopefully someone will gift you with a dictionary since you don’t seem capable of differentiating between whining and asking an observational question on your own or there’s always google if you’d prefer to educate yourself more instantaneously. Call me crazy, but “I just want to be the first comment” kinda sounded like whining to me and clearly I wasn’t the only one who got that impression so… Also if it were meaningless to you then why say it at all? You have to admit its pretty unusual for someone’s first response after reading an interview like this to be that they “just want to be the first comment”. Most would be wanting to discuss all of the new information they had gleaned from the interview. The internet does make it easy for your actual intent to get lost in translation so if it truly wasn’t your intent to whine then I apologize, but that’s just how it came off so you really can’t blame people for being surprised by it and saying so.

Do you think he needs help picking up his face you just dragged through the dirt?lolz

The main flaw with the book you just wrote is that I did not read the article before posting my comment. I jumped at the opportunity to be the first to post a comment because i didn’t see the guy who posted a minute before me, and then I went on to read the article. If I  hadn’t missed being the first comment by a few seconds then you might understand the wording of my comment a little better, and you wouldn’t have taken it as whining. Get it? I hope so because i don’t know how to make it anymore clear for you. Reallyyyy not that big of a deal here..

          • bella ♥ vita

EXACTLY! Its NOT that big of a deal in the slightest so again I ask you what’s with the nasty attitude and attempted insults? Silly me for assuming that if someone were commenting on an article that they had actually read the article in question before doing so. What a foolish notion! As for you referring to my reply as a “book”, really? I’m so sorry for actually being articulate and trying to get my point and intent across as clearly as possible. I only asked the question because I’ve never been able to wrap my head around the whole obsession people have with being first so you seemed the perfect person to ask since your comment specifically stated that you just wanted to be first. Unlike you, I wasn’t being at all malicious so I don’t know why you felt the need to take it to such a completely negative place. If I’d known that you’d react in the way you have I certainly never would’ve even asked.

“I just want to be the first to comment” sounds nothing like whining.  More like he’s trying to have fun with the comment section.  Take a chill pill.  Or grab a sense of humor.

          • bella ♥ vita

Is it really necessary to stoop to personal insults just because you seem to be incapable of maturely and respectfully discussing a disagreement with others? Plus it doesn’t help your case at all since you know nothing what so ever about those you’re attempting to insult. For instance why on earth would I need to take a chill pill? I’m in a fantastic mood and completely relaxed. All I did was ask a very simple question out of nothing more than curiosity. Its really not that big of a deal at all! Yourself and the original commenter are the only ones who seem to be getting all bent out of shape about it so perhaps you should take your own advice. As for my sense of humor… really now? I actually have an exceptional sense of humor and am frequently told by almost every person I’ve ever met that I should be a comedian, but then you wouldn’t know anything about that or anything else about me now would you? You know being that you’re a total stranger and all.

Ok great, it didn’t sound like whining to you, but you’re only one person so while that may be your opinion and you’re absolutely entitled to it, myself and several other people felt that it did sound like whining and we’re entitled to our opinions as well. Then again I’ve never understood that whole silliness about being first. Just always seemed really juvenile and pointless (no offense at all intended to those who do enjoy doing that, just saying its not for me).

          • Wwrestler92

I love how your only comments on this thread are about me and my first post. If you’re so interested in the interview go join the others up top and stop worrying about me and the guy who understood my comment. You’re out of line here, and you’re making yourself look like a fool.

          • bella ♥ vita

Coming from almost anyone else I might actually take that seriously, but given your obvious bias on the matter that’s never going to happen. Since you’re also obviously so interested, the only reason I even saw your first post let alone replied was because my laptop froze mid scroll and when it unfroze the scrollbar shot to the very bottom of the page. I actually never comment on a big interview like this the first time I read it. I prefer to read it and give myself at least about a week or so to really consider and analyze what I’ve read then read it a second time right before I comment. I only continue to reply to you and your friend because Disqus annoyingly sends me an email every time someone replies to one of my comments and I’ll always take the time to defend myself when anyone is being disrespectful, insulting, or misinterpreting something I’ve said or done.

Regardless, this conversation is going absolutely nowhere and its over. I’m not going to argue with you so we just have to agree to disagree because I don’t have the time, energy, or patience to keep bickering like kids with you. You don’t talk to me and I won’t talk to you either. I’m sure we both have far far better things to do so PLEASE just drop it and don’t even reply to this.
