The Inheritance Cycle Book Club is a podcast-styled read-through of Eragon, Eldest, and Brisingr aimed at refreshing fans and entertaining new readers as we venture toward the release of Inheritance. Each of the twenty episodes will discuss set portions of the books, in order, and will tackle the events of each reading, theories arising from the reading, and more. Join us for our adventure through the series!

Episode seven of Shurtugal.com’s Inheritance Cycle Book Club Podcast has finally arrived! Our seventh episode tackles the second set of chapters from Eldest, discussing the important events of this week’s set of reading. We thought it’d be one of our slower episodes, but boy were we wrong! Mike mistakenly introduces the show as a Doctor Who podcast before launching back into the “Nasuada: Love Her or Hate Her?” fray he created in past episodes. Join us as we discuss visiting Tarnag, venturing to Ellesmera, encountering new elves in Ceris, Arya and Eragon’s lovers’ quarrels, Roran and Carvahall’s daring defenses, and more! Plus we tackle some of the hottest theories related to this section in our spoiler section at the end of the podcast. Be sure to read along as we read through all three books over the next twenty weeks!

Don’t forget that we’ve “hidden” a secret word in each episode of the Book Club. Collect all twenty words for a shot at an incredible grand prize, as well as many more runners-up prizes to be revealed in the coming weeks! Additionally, this week’s episode contains a way for fans to win a set of Eragon, Eldest, and Brisingr signed by Christopher Paolini!

I’d like to point out that (and I’ll be honest I don’t listen to these so if it was commented on forgive me, but since I noticed this reading Eldest…) that I’ve seen in the past people wondering how much time has past. On the journey to Ellesmera Eragon says that Saphira is 8 months old.I think just about two years has past by the end of Brisingr. The mentions of time are kept short to “a few days” in the book. Also at the end of Eldest when Eragon took control of Du Vrangr Gata Trianna said “We have devoted our lives to the study of our art. You have been casting speels for less that two years.” I don’t think she would have said “less than two years” if it wasn’t closer to it. Otherwise C.P. probably would have wrote her saying “just over a year” or something along those lines.

Just my thoughts, what do you guys think?

I’m kind of conflicted on the topic of Nasuada. On one hand, i feel she makes good leadership decisions and does the best she can to keep all factions of the varden happy. On the other, i agree that she seems to be possesive of Eragon and indeed the Varden in general. There is also a quote from Eldest (i don’t have the book to hand so forget the exact wording) in which she says that magic users need to be “dealt with”. While i can understand the opinion, its too much like prejudice towards a specific group for me to like her.

I wonder if the Fanghurs have legs. I always imagined them not having any. Liked the moment in Eldest when Arya and Saphira watched the sunrise when Eragon awoke. I have a feeling that Arya told Saphira what she really thought about Eragon but as always, had her swear another oath about the conversation.

  • Adilas73

Its almost like Nasuada is trying to get in first to “claim Eragon” as HER dragon rider. She really dose’nt know that dragon riders are free.

  • Broohahah

Do you all sit around a table at Mike’s place and chat or something?

    • Anonymous

      i’ve always wondered that LOL

    • Haha, I wish! No, we do it through Skype. Mike lives in New England, I live in Pittsburgh, and Chris lives in… Alabama? Arkansas? I can’t remember the A state. But point is, we aren’t close (I wish we were, I would totally be raiding Mike’s bookshelves on a regular basis). We all usually get together in person a few times a year for events; for example, the next time I’ll see Mike in person will be at the release of Inheritance. But we talk almost every day via email.

      • Arkansas

        • Thanks. Why can’t I remember that? You’ve told me like five times! I’ll remember this time, I promise.

You know Mike, the reason I, personally, am vegetarian is because I see no reason to needlessly kill animals. Especially in a current society where nutrition comes in so many forms. Plus, it seems excessively cruel to eat an animal that was raised to be slaughtered. It just seems unfair and kind of disgusting.

But, hey I wouldn’t know what it tastes like, would I?

  • Jon Cypher

I also would love to hear fans on the show, it would be nice to hear others opinions and thoughts towards the reading. As for why Arya is my favorite character? I would say one of the main reasons is she is always mysterious, I love that, I can’t predict her behavior while other characters like Eragon, Orik or Nasuada, I would know what they would do given this situation. Arya you will never know, she is special it that way as a character.

Love separating Roran from Eragon; I just skip over Roran’s entire section ha. OK and I’m totally with you, Mike & Chris on the Nasuada thing. Dislike her because it feels like she tries too hard; she doesn’t feel to me to be a genuine character. Also I just dislike her personality. She was okay in Eragon but ever since becoming leader of the Varden…bleh!

    • Anonymous

wow! why did u do that? dont you like Roran? i found it so interesting to re-read.. ‘n agree with Nasuada’s thing.

  • Anonymous

I cant blame Arya for how shes acting, her beloved and a close friend of hers was killed at the same time, she was then kidnapped and tortured, shes on her way to see her mother whom shes become, i would say estranged, with. so i could just imagine how confused and upset she is, i also believe that she could be feeling guilty and conflicted because if she has developed feelings for eragon then she probably feels guilty about it because of her recent loss of faolin, and confused because she cant distract him from his duties and as an ambassador to the queen im sure that kind of relationship would probably be looked at as inappropriate because she is probably supposed to be acting very professional towards him. Also she has had a long time to think about all of this which probably has upset her more, especially as she is reaching her homeland.

  • bromandsaphira

I would LOVE to see a fan on the show! hehe, namely me 🙂 and yes, I would love to hear other people’s openions!!

  • Kris

I wanna put in my two cents about how Arya seems to be so hard to figure out and seems to be giving Eragon mixed signals. Here’s my take for what its worth 🙂 I think that we have to remember that Arya is super old. (by our standards anyway) and I believe she sees Eragon as we would a child. A beloved child, but still a child (possibly and older child though) When she tenderly touches his face, and then “clams up” about things, I don’t necessarily see those as conflicting signals. I don’t see the face touching or the “For You” saying from the last section as romantic signals (even though Eragon might because he sees her as a peer age wise) I think they were the kind of gestures we might make to a child we love. But we wouldn’t talk about things that are personal to us with a child as with Arya talking or “clamming up” about Faolin and Glenwing. So I don’t think she’s sending mixed signals, I just think she’s treating Eragon (much to his dismay I’m sure!) as we would treat a 10 or 11 year old. As for the part where she gets her britches in a bunch, I think that was just a fluke thing because of everything going on with her, she just lost patience for a bit as we all can tend to do (do elven women have hormones like us I wonder lol) and she DID appologize later after Eragon appologized. Anyway, right or wrong, thats how I see it and how I like to read it :0)

Did anyone else notice in this reading that the dwarves don’t share that name of a certain mountain with any race? Im thinking that could be the rock of Kuthian. That would explain why the elves can only half remember it. Arya has spent a lot of time with the dwarves and Oromis is just super smart, so he could have found out over the years and forgot again. What do you think?

On a similar note, What is the Dwarven name for the Beor Mountains?

awesome podcast. the idea of separate Roran’s section from Eragon’s section did fit. nice catch.
i laugh so much listening to those podcast LOL sometimes people around me think i’m kinda crazy hahaha’ my parents still have to get used, rs.
anyway, my favorite part of this week’s reading was Saphira and Eragon fighting against those wind-vipers. that was SO COOL! I mean, I found that to be interesting when I first read but I hadn’t realized that that fighting was actually the very first one against flying creatures they fought together. When Saphira flips upside down and kicks vipers.. I found that scene to be SO AWESOME! and when she breaths fire… LOL that was totally awesome. well written, too.

Does anyone have any recolition of how long it takes for dragon egg shell to die down if ever it does, because i was thinking how could dragon egg surive so long.

    • Rdwizzrd

The dragons eggs were enchanted by the dragon rider masters before the fall of the riders to endure time until the dragon inside chose its rider. I’m pretty sure in Brisingr, Oromis and Glaedr share the spell with Eragon and Saphira before the leave toward the end of the book.

      • weetniks

i thought that dragon eggs only hatched when the time was ‘safe’ for them to hatch and they could wait for along time. and the riders only changed this so that the egg would hatch for a rider the dragon choses.

        • Adilas73

no, I mean after the dragon has hatched does the shell disintergrate.

          • Anonymous

i think it takes a long time. remember when Eragon eventually found a hatched green dragon egg (or the rest of it) in the forest ? (i think it’s in Eragon).. CP has stated that the hatched green egg was not the Greenie’s egg (which is still under Galby’s possession)

i think it was an egg hatched far before the Forsworn therefore the shells must take a long to disintegrate, as you said.

          • Anonymous

It’s in Eldest at the stone of broken eggs. (I can’t remember the name exactly)

is it? i dunno either. i just know that it is in a forest.

  • Haha wow this episode was probably the best you’ve recorded so far. Took me forever to get through it but it was worth it. One thing I’ve wanted to say was that I noticed how Gannel told Eragon that humans were made of earth. I don’t know about anyone else’s religion, but in my native Islam we also believe humans are made of earth. In this week’s reading, Arya was acting really strange and I wasn’t liking her, but in the future when you really find out her reasons for acting rude and outright weird. So I love her =) I was really amazed by how Eragon and Saphira observe and learn from everything. Not many guys his age will do that, including myself though I’m 2.5 years younger. About the Ascudgamln (fists of steel) I would actually imagine Roran with them rather than Eragon. Eragon is more of the sword/magic type while Roran just grabs whatever and brains his victims ( Eragon spars, Roran lifts weights, all ya gotta know =) ). Also, about Eragon’s emotions for Arya: guys don’t always immediately recognize they’re beginning to be attracted to someone, and I speak from experience. And I’m surprised that you guys skip the songs. I actually sing them aloud sometimes (of course checking I’m alone, it’s bad enough to make the elves crack up if they heard me). To Mike, I think Arya told the two remaining elves not to tell anyone of her, Eragon, and Saphira BECAUSE the queen must be the first to know.

Now that I’m done rambling like a drunken dwarf, two things left:

My favorite part was whenever Eragon just described the scenery while floating down the river, especially during the scene where the dwarf guards bowed to that huge mountain (whatever it was called). I actually listened to “Journey to the How” from the Prince Caspian movie soundtrack to imagine how peaceful it was.

Second, you guys are doing an absolutely awesome job in the podcast series. I’m really enjoying them! Chris’s accent, Lauren’s YES, and Mike’s hilarious speeches are really fun to listen to! Even intelligent people use words like “umm”, “like totally”, and “y’all”. Keep it up 🙂

    ~Waleed K.

    • Anonymous

i totally agree with everything you said. but I disagree with you in which concerns to Roran. dude, if he had those fists of steel he’d be able to kill Galby by himself. later on he kills almost two hundred soldiers with his unbelievable hammer. LOL I’d be scared if he had that (thanks God it is impossible for him to acquire them).
And I understood why arya actually acted like that (all old readers do) except when she touches Eragon’s cheeks. I mean, come on. Poor guy. She should have figured out what was going on.

      • Anonymous

remember that roran killed the majority of the soldiers with spears. so he is just a beast with anything!!! 🙂

Ugh I’m having issues. Can’t get it to play here for some reason, and when i try and play it on Itunes it says “the streaming server cannot accept any more connections at this time” I’m dying here, I want to listen! Any of you computer savvy people know what could be going wrong? My computer and internet are working just fine otherwise.

    • Fairth

It’s possible that the server responsible for handling outgoing downloads is being bogged down.  If that’s the case, the answer might be as simple as waiting till a different time of day when iTunes isn’t as busy.

If you’re getting the feeling that it’s closer to home, it may have something to do with a slow-down at a bottleneck related to your internet provider (quite unlikely).  Here again, a different time of day might help.

If you think that it could be in your computer (plausible, but unlikely); I would try deleting you’re cookies and clearing the cash related to your web browser(s).  If this has no effect, it might be worth it to look into clearing out some of your RAM.  If nothing else, doing this will make your computer run quicker.

Personally, I think that the first possibility I mentioned is the most likely, but it’s also possible that none of my advice will work.  I haven’t experienced this myself, and the answer wouldn’t be one size fits all even if I did, but my general experience with computers would suggest this to be a good place to start.

Gimli and Legolas were killing Orcs not humans until Return of the King where it was a lot of the ghosts

  • Logic Lawyer

In my opinion, things like poems and songs that serve to color the world but aren’t really important to the story are okay, so long as there aren’t too many of them and they don’t bog down, or distract from, the pace of the book. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having one here and there, as there tends to be in the Inheritance Cycle. However, those would be one of the first things I’d consider to be removed if a book had to be edited down to a smaller word count.

I thought this was a fun Podcast! I like the way you separated the chapters about Eragon and Roran. Also, about bringing on fans to talk on the Podcasts, I think it’s a really cool idea. One of the reasons that I love these Podcasts so much is that I get to hear other peoples’ opinions on the characters, places and things that happen. Just hearing about their personal perspectives is very interesting and makes me think about those things in a different direction, rather than my own. So, that being said, I think that having other people on to talk about the books and giving their opinions would be really cool.

Chris: I am an Arya fan as well! I love the fact that she can be confusing, but when you read the books the second or third time it gets easier to understand her character, or at least that’s how I feel! I <3 Arya!!!

  • Bree

Did know this was going on, so going to listen to them all, great idea!

  • british123

awh, this one was so good! I agree with you Lauren, the religion of the dwarves is really interesting! By the way, Mike don’t be too horrible to Chris about his accent, it’s cool! Oh and by the way, I’d love to do the fan host thingy! And I’d like to listen fans being on.

    • Anonymous

yeah. i also got interested on this.
but i think it’d be a bit complicated. i mean, the fans would have to live in the US, right? therefore, no way of getting foreign people. I personally don’t mind, but i dunno, maybe some people would.

  • I guess not enough people sent in ‘Varden Propaganda Posters’ because they didn’t say anything about it.

    • We received a few, just didn’t have time to feature them this week (it was already way too long of an episode).

      • Fairth

I’ve got a few to submit (will in the next day or two).  I’m a student at a community college studying graphic arts.  I think you’ll get a kick out of what I’ve got (one has Arya as the focal point that I think Chris will find interesting).

Mike, actually the theory that you accidentally read twice must have been Emily’s, because it wasn’t mine. I am guilty of sending you theories that weren’t related to the week’s reading (I may resend them when you get to that part). My name is pretty unusual so don’t feel guilty for struggling with it. you pronounced it right the first time though, you second guessed yourself!

    • I remember reading your very helpful name pronunciation guide and mastering it before the episode… then completely blanked when it came to actually saying it. I’m sorry again!

As for your theories, there WAS a theory I wanted to include of yours. I will include it next week, I promise!

Seems to be a trend in the thread so felt like adding, i love the southern accents and the Y’alls too 😛 not much of that in the UK so its nice to hear it.

  • AvaAnnaZ

But if Galbatorix had his first dragon’s eldunari, which he would have been able to communicate with, then I doubt he would have been driven mad with grief as his dragon would still be technically alive. It’s possible that he found about the eldunari from Morzan or someone else.

  • mike early

the Quan dwarf clan’s staff-sword is called a huthvir if anyone did not already know that

  • Saphira7425

    1) Mike leave Chris’s accent alone I personally enjoy a southern accent, also its not a very pronounced accent….. I live up North and am always saying Y’all and All Y’all (bet you don’t know the difference between them)

    2) Also I think that Fan hosts is a great Idea.

    3) I also Dislike Nasuada, and wouldn’t be upset if she died…

    4) I think Arya does like Eragon but doesn’t want to distract him ( someone tells him this later on in the book)

    • Saphira7425

Oh and  5) I do read songs in books the first time through then I skip or sing them depending…

    • It’s been an ongoing joke between us since 2004.  He’s jealous of my accent!

  • =blushes madly= thanks for mentioning my picture in the podcast. =digitally high fives=
for those of you who haven’t seen it (aka the colored):

With the podcast: poor Eragon, goin’ through puberty and being conflicted. Good thing the “Be-dazzler” wasn’t invented in Eragon’s time. Maybe the inventor is part dwarf.

god! i saw the sketch but it’s by far more awesome than any other picture i’ve ever seen of that scene.

  • Questioner

Where is the CP interview from the comic con?

    • Anonymous

He said in the podcast that is will be out soon. patience is a virtue

  • Irock13198

well, you guys got me hooked on docter who, i would be watching it now but im listening to you guys!

    • So glad to hear it!

      • Anonymous

what got you hooked on Dr.Who Mike?

  • AvaAnnaZ

I’m only 1 minute in and this podcast is already amazing. Thank you so much for making these nuggets of joy!!

  • Dorota

And, honestly, Chris Addison’s accent is so mild that I didn’t even know he was southern until y’all said something.

Yes. I use the word “y’all” with pride.

    • Yeah, I rarely notice his accent (except for when he says “ya’ll” — can’t really miss that…), I just enjoy picking on him. All in good fun. 😛

  • Dorota

As for songs/poems in books, I tend to skip over them as well. But, strangely, I do not do this for The Lord of the Rings, perhaps because the movies have provided melodies for some of them.

    • stroodle_910

But what about those two page long songs while they are in Rivendell; do you read those too?

  • Random12345

So, Mike, you put in “This week’s tangent: Opinions cannot be wrong!” in the outline. That was the same thing you said to me.

So, this personalizes the podcast for me!

    • 🙂 I wrote this one for you, Random12345!

      • Random12345

        Thanks

      • Random12345

        Thanks

So, I know this is really random but I wanted to mention it.  I was listening to the podcast and I enjoy putting a face to a voice so I looked up the pictures of the three of you doing the podcast, although I couldn’t find Chris.  Lauren, has anyone told you that you look a lot like Zooey Deschanel?

    • Wow, I hadn’t even noticed that she does a bit, doesn’t she? Maybe Chris will post a photo of himself in the comments.

      • I could post a picture of him. However the only pictures I have are of us from the Brisingr release a few years ago. Maybe we could raid his Facebook page.

        • Check out the shurtugal facebook admin list.  You can click and see my profile pic, or my little thumbnail with my comment post on here….which is from the Brisingr release.  Maybe I should update that haha.

    • I get that a LOT, her and Katy Perry. I guess there are worse women to look like in this world!

  • JonD

I think its funny how Roran starts counting how many he has killed its mind blowing he never wanted to kill anyone he just wants to start his new life with Katrina.

  • stroodle_910

I would LOVE to be on the show! Anyone doing it would be awesome really, but if I got on I can’t begin to describe how excited I would be.

  • stroodle_910

When I see lyrics in a book, depending on how long they go on, I will either try to put a tune to it and get side tracked for about 10 minutes, or I will skip over it. Usually, if the lyrics are long, I skip over it; if they are short, I sing:)

  • Macs_bunch

I don’t want to hear fans run the podcast.  Too much trouble/confusion.  You guys are doing awsome, and there is only a few more weeks left!!!

  • ItsEminem

Yep. Eragon is completely hopeless when it comes to women. He really needs to grow up and man up. I kept flinching everytime he talked to Arya: Man I tell you he is a shame to the male species. I mean the teenagers I know aren’t that hopeless when it comes to women and they have a lot more confidence with them than Eragon. I found the scene where he proclaims his love to Arya so cheesy and corny and pathetic. It’s no surprise she rejected him; she needs a REAL MAN lol. To make it worse he starts crying like a little 10 year old b**** after she’s left. Theres my little rant

  • AD10Zah

Do we have to be U.S. residents to to enter?

  • si

ummm wasnt CP supposed to be on these episodes like now or very soon ???

    • Amaris

      next week.

    • I said something during the episode about this. I’ve never given a specific week, just “soon”. He’s very busy and we’re trying to work something out as soon as possible. He’ll be on soon, but no guarantee of when.

If people sent in questions for Christopher thinking he was gonna be on for episode 7, are you saving them for when he is on or should we re-send them?

  • Fairth

First off, I really like the idea of having fans as guest hosts for two or three podcasts.  I don’t want to be on because I’m more like Chris, not too talkative (sounds great when he does talk though), but if you can find someone who could keep-up with you (Mike) and Lauren I think that would be great.

One note on the encounter with As Sweldin Rak Anhuin (spelling?).  I agree that they were acting children, and I don’t care for the group, but think about what they’ve been through.  Consider this: your original clan was basically wiped out because of the Riders and now the newest rider showed up on your doorstep as a member of the leading clan.  That’s got to hurt.  Sure, maybe it was others of your kind that are primarily responsible for the allegiance, but this rider is here now and presents a good focal point for your anger.  Both because it dampens the feeling that your own race betrayed you and because you’re angry at the Dragon Riders on principle.
The dwarves where guilty of taking it too far, but their basic feelings are understandable.

Quick question.  If I have some of the WWII inspired posters that you asked for in the last podcast, where should I send them?

    • Noodleyful

Yeah I’m touching up my artwork, it’ll be done very soon.

  • Guest

Mike,(random) So for the Green Egg to hatch for the Good Side wouldn’t it mean they’d have to
steal it then wait like 5 months or however many for it to even breath
fire while having the rider trained unless(it’s arya then it will be
easier and shorter) for them to even matter? or it hatched already for
    galby’s side.

    • MegaRetard

It does not have 2 breathe fire to be ready to fight, though it is a plus

    • stroodle_910

If Arya is one of the people to steal the egg, it COULD hatch on the the way back to… wherever they go. My personal theory is that Jeod ALSO found an egg back when he and Brom stole Saphira’s. He kept it a secret, just like Brom, and took the egg to Elesmera instead of the Varden. Arya wasn’t ever around because she was ferrying the other egg back and forth. I don’t know why the Elves would keep it a secret, but they did. When Arya, Eragon, and Saphira get to Elesmera, Arya is presented with the green egg and it hatches for her. Thus the green fragments of shell found on the cliffs at The Place of Broken Eggs. I really like my theory as it would give Greeni time to grow and mature. It could stay with Oromis and Glaedr whenever Arya had to leave and Arya could still talk to him in her mind no matter where she was.

      • Aplussoccerkid

I thought CP said that the green egg fragments didn’t have anything to do with greenie, I’m not possitive I just thought he said that. Great theory though, I love it!

        • Anonymous

He did say in an interview that it was just a coincidence, but he could be throwing us off! 🙂

      • firemonkey

My personal theory is that Eragon will steal the egg and then he will get in trouble and have to transport the egg using the spell he learned in Ellesmera to Arya and it will hatch for her.

        • Daniela

I also believe that there IS a reason why CP made Oromis learn Eragon this spell. I have learnt that almost anything that seems very random and not really relevant for the ongoing story is definitely relevant for the future events in the books.

      • Guest

I don’t think that would work as Eragon would’ve noticed the thing on her hand, and when they were being trained they would’ve noticed a dragon

  • Adilas73

Hosts, remember that J.R.R Tolkien was involved in WW1 and actually experianced real war that effected him forever.

I love the idea of fan guest hosts. and i really hope i get picked 🙂

I find it hard to get into the written songs because i don’t know how to read it (meaning in what beat). I’ve been doing music since i was little, so i am a little ocd about reading the song in rhythem.

Mike, i would love to hear you debate religion. 🙂 just saying

    • This will never happen, sorry. Real world politics and religion will always be excluded from the podcast and from Shur’tugal. There’s too many people here with many different views on each and I have no wish to offend or inflame any side, which is usually the case in those sort of debates.

I know you couldn’t on the podcast, but i just mean in general. i’m into that stuff and it would be fun to listen to/be apart of

  • Helen Beddis

I don’t know if you know but episodes six and seven don’t show up on iTunes

    • They are right now! iTunes doesn’t update instantly, it takes an hour or two to propagate.
