BREAKING NEWS: First sneak-peek at Book 4!

While we still have no release date or book title (anyone claiming otherwise is lying), we have officially received our first sneak peek of Book 4, the final installment in the Inheritance Cycle! The sneak peek was released in the trade paperback copy of Brisingr, which hit bookstores on April 13th in the USA and Canada.

The book excerpt is the fourth chapter of Book 4, entitled “King Cat”. We won’t give you any spoilers, but we will say that Christopher Paolini’s numerous hints in multiple interviews with Shurtugal.com about werecats playing a larger role in Book 4 have finally been proven true. What does that mean about this chapter? Pick up a copy and find out!

We’ll be releasing a review of the chapter, as well as an in-depth analysis of what it means for Book 4 and the upcoming release date, here on Shur’tugal in the near future. Keep checking back — this is one article you don’t want to miss!

How can you get your hands on the first sneak peek from Book 4? Buy a copy of Brisingr in trade paperback. It’s currently for sale in all major bookstores across the United States and Canada, and will likely be available through your local book stores. If you’re looking to save $4.80 on a copy of the paperback version, you can purchase through Amazon.com today for a total of $10.19! (All purchases of the book through Amazon will benefit Shurtugal.com.)

when will eldest come out on dvd

    @Elrish (Guest):

I guess that it is hard to fit everything into one book. There are a lot of loose ends to tie up in just one book. Its also takes time to get inspiration. Chistopher Paolini is a great writer, but he is human and can only write a great book so fast.

BTW, are we absolutely sure that the last egg is green? maybe its another unknown dragon. And hey , this is just a theory, but what if Thorn joins the Varden and he and Sphira have a baby and its green. (just a theory, people) and are we sure the cover of book 4 will be a green dragon?

@Murtaughmight (Guest): Definitely. Arya is supposed to have black hair and pointed ears and be more beautiful than humans, and Brom is supposed to be what, 120 years old? He certainly doesn’t look like that in the movie. Aside from the characters, the movie didn’t follow the plot very well. It was a real disappointment, on my opinion.

@Murtaughmight (Guest): Nah, they shouldn’t remake the film. We all have expectations after reading the books and it won’t be the same. For a start, they got Eragon wrong: In the book he has brown hair and brown eyes but the actor in the film (Ed Spelleers (sp?)) had blond hair. Brom didn’t even look the way i imagined

Am I the only one who thinks that they should remake the movie? i mean, action wise was good, but they killed off the Ra’zac… which is pretty much the base outline for the whole second book… so in saying this, i think that a bigger company with a way bigger budget should take on this task. Because i can see this book (movie) becoming quite large… maybe not LOTR, but pretty big all-the-same

This is just a way of rich people getting even richer by benefiting on some people who clearly have a problem since they can’t wait a bit longer to just read a small particle of the fourth book.
If you don’t have a copy of Brisingr yet, it’s ok to buy the one with the new chapter, but if you do already own a copy, you need to see a shrink.
There are more useful ways to spend your money, trust me.

What angela means with cheep cheep? who knows, gut think of Thenga (the guy Eragon found on his way back from helgrind) when Eragon spoke of Thenga, Solembum commented: He kicks at cats. maybe the werecats judge angela by her past teacher, maybe she has some grudge against werecats, but whatever it is solembum must have allowed her to follow him with his travels at some point.

by the way, what do you think angela means when she says ‘cheep, cheep’?

The book 4 excerpt can be read online (by clicking here and ‘looking inside’ the book and going to the last few pages):

I’m presuming it’s ok to read it there because Amazon.com has taken the responsibility to post it online.

Yeah, if you pay more for premium shipping. I did the regular four day free shipping, so that it would actually cost nineteen dollars.
If you pay extra for shipping, WHAT is the point of getting it in the mail, if you can just go to Wal-Mart and get it for fourteen dollars?

When book four comes out, there is NO WAY I’m buying it from Amazon or any other online store.
Not to cause offense, but when Brisingr came out, there was this big to-do about how if you ordered it from Amazon through shurtugal.com, you got it a lot cheaper.
Well, unless you pay a bunch for shipping, you don’t get the book until four days after it releases. That happened to me last time.
And Saturday morning, Brisingr was selling for fourteen dollars at Wal-Mart. I paid something like eighteen dollars for mine when I bought it on Amazon, and I got it four days late.

Tulkas is right, they released the first few pages of the chapter “Assault on Helgrind” in some special edition of Eldest, and then released it online (for free) some time later. However, I seem to remember it being being a couple of months later, not just a couple of weeks. Either way, it will still be available long before the book itself is.

Personally I’m just glad to hear the news. I have to imagine that the first draft is completed, otherwise they wouldn’t be releasing anything.

Oh my god, finally, some news, Thank you shurtugal and thank you paolini.

But you guys are right, I wouldn’t buy it just to read the passage. I have only one copy of Brisingr, the hardback I ordered three months before it was released.

But the term King Cat could suggest the king of the werecats, with Solembum as prince. Just an idea, probably won’t happen

Oh, you do spoil us Shurty! Two updates in one day, try keeping up the rate and I’ll be ecstatic. Would it be possible to post up the first paragraph of the new chapter? (I do understand the legal implications, so no worries if it isn’t possible). I also made a post a few articles ago on the possibility of a fan-art competition, how about the prize being this new Brisingr edition?

Book IV appears to be on the horizon, the fist chapter is set in stone. This means that the rewrite and proofing has already commenced or maybe even finished!!! 😀

    Cheers, -Marco

It’s about time that something like this happened. I was beginning to give up on finishing the Cycle before my 18th birthday, whereupon I will be selling my collection on eBay.

Well, last night someone posted a summary of that chapter in IHF and I was lucky enough to read it before the topic got deleted, hehe.

However I would buy that new edition because I only have the first edition of Brisingr and that`s too big. But I currently live in Europe. Does anybody know if we can buy it here as well?

And for the record: there is no author that releases so much free information about upcoming books as CP does.

We don’t know if the book is actually finished yet, but I’d wager that it is very close at this point.

Technically, it isn’t stealing to read a book from the library or in a bookstore. In our Waterstones there is a few chairs so you can sit and read books. Also, libraries would be illegal if you HAD to buy the book.
If it were stealing, books would have a wrapping so that you couldn’t open them until you’d bought them.
Anyway, enough about that. In your view it’s stealing, but it isn’t in the eyes of the law. Do you know if it’s available in the UK? I’ve checked a few websites (waterstones/whsmiths) and those are the biggies. Any copies of it in paperback do not have the sticker.
Also, the paperback version of Brisingr has been available over here for months.

Do we know if the book is actually finished? If so, is waiting for the book to be released a “attention” grabbing tactic just to get the readers anticipating the book more?

Unfortunately Shingi, your understanding of marketing, the publishing industry, and corporations in general seems fairly limited. Several statements of yours are far-fetched and without merit.

You’re forgetting the main point: a paperback edition of Brisingr would have released with or without Book 4’s chapter in it, for the SAME PRICE. Book 4’s chapter inclusion can be, as you said, called free promotional material because it has not raised the price of the book at all. Not a cent extra to read that chapter. It’s in there because it was ready at this point in time and clearly was not ready for inclusion in any previous editions. It’s entirely possible that this chapter will make its way into new print copies of Brisingr in hardcover and onto the internet as well (a news search would have shown that excerpts from Eldest and Brisingr were made available online after their publications in the previous books).

In the end, the argument comes down to whether or not you’re forced to buy any of this to enjoy the Cycle. You aren’t. You can wait for Book 4 like the rest of us, wait for the paperback to come out in the library, or you can pay $10 to read it now.

People need to make money. The book industry does not have the profit margins that the music, movies, and TV industry have. A band can sell their CD, sell concert tickets, and sell merchandise. A movie can sell movie tickets (multiple times to see one movie), DVDs, and merchandise. TV sells advertising on their episodes, releases episodes on DVD, releases movie spinoffs, and sells merchandise. Authors sell their book, which makes them a fairly low amount of money (look up royalties) and that’s that.

We are ruining the comments here and because of that, I’m going to ask you to continue this discussion with me (if you care to) through our feedback form. People are coming here to discuss the very exciting news, not business practices, so I want to make this be the last post on the subject. I will reply to your feedback email (or anyone who wants to weigh in on the subject), or you can even go create a thread over on Inheritance Forums. Otherwise our staff will delete any further conversations about it on here to keep the comments clear for those wishing to discuss the news itself. 🙂

Mike, you mention that bonus content has been released on both his website and newsletters. As far as I can tell, the archived newsletters on his website stopped in September 2008 and never included deleted scenes etc. As for content which has been released online, I am unable to find any, unless you are referring to the ‘monthly’ Q&A’s, which I do appreciate, despite their steady decline in quality quantity and punctuality, which I believe you have already admitted to. If you could actually direct me to some bonus content that has been released online I would be most grateful, for, as I would like to stress, I am an avid fan and follower of the series.

Perhaps I didn’t make myself completely clear, or perhaps we simply hold juxtaposing views on the matter, but I find it absurd to purchase a whole book, so that I can read the 1/2 new chapters that have been released. When the book was initially released, I expected it to be complete, any chapters that were deleted should have been removed because they were superfluous. Instead, I come to feel that chapters may have been removed simply to force people to buy the book again, if they want to read what was left out the first time.

As I previously stated, I consider Deluxe Editions of any books to be akin to memorabilia. Therefore, including extra artwork, a letter from the author, or perhaps signing the book should appeal to a hardline fan. That is why J.K. Rowling published expensive Deluxe Editions; people who were not willing to fork out $50 for another copy of a book they already owned didn’t have to and wouldn’t miss out on any of the plot if they did. If Christopher’s publishers were so desperate to sell bonus content to people, I would respect them more if they simply sold the *new* content online at an appropriate price for only 1 or 2 chapters of a novel. I apologise if this paragraph has descended into a rant, that was not my intention.

Lastly, you suggest that we should be extremely grateful that he has released an excerpt of Book 4. I am sure that I should credit you with the intelligence to understand that any sneak peek of a book/film etc. is a marketing ploy that attempts to increase interest and sales for when the product is eventually released. The fact that people are being charged to see what is essentially a ‘teaser trailer’, is arrogant and verges on the disgraceful, in my opinion.

I did not wish to cast any aspersions on Christopher’s personality, I am sure he is most “grateful and selfless”, and I completely understand that he needs to make a profit from his work. The hard work that he performed writing the books was payed off when they were successful and bought by millions of people worldwide, however, I do believe that selling the same book to people 3 times is pushing it a long way too far. Personally, I find it hard to believe that he is penniless and struggling after the great success of his novels and selling the film rights (despite the film’s dismal failure to do the book justice).

Lastly, could I perhaps ask what the ‘both ways’ I supposedly want are? As far as I am aware, all I want is to be able to read all the content of a book when I buy it, instead of having it drip-fed to me at extortionate prices.

Obviously, your role does grant you a much clearer understanding of what goes in “inside the world of inheritance”, but perhaps you see things through a tinted lens, sometimes things are much clearer from outside looking in. Just a thought.

    Yours,

    Shingi

I like this 🙂 where the managing staff talk with us 🙂 it’s nice seeing their opinions on their own site haha!

Where people are complaining about the EXTRA copy of it, i agree with Mike, as he is true. Most authors whose books are world-renowned etc etc have released more than one copy and a deluxe version. It is not greedy, therefore, for Chris to do the same. I am not going to complain about the extra book, but my friend is going to buy it because i have persuaded her to become an inheritence fan–Now she’s as hard-core fan as i am lol. It is fair to say that we shouldn’t buy it because of how many versions have been released, but it isn’t fair to call Chris greedy or whatever. I would’ve prefered him to have chosen a chapter he had already written and added it to the end of Brisingr, but i understand why people will be annoyed at this “offer”.

I personally will not buy it, sorry CP 🙂 ill just wait to buy Book4 😀

While I respect your opinion, Shingi, having literally lived and worked inside of the world of Inheritance for the past 6 years of my life, I can without a doubt tell you that you are incorrect. Christopher Paolini is one of the most grateful and selfless people I have met, as is the brilliant team behind the books. They, like the rest of us, need to profit off of their work.

You were able to cite the name of one or two authors that provide free content, yes. Christopher has done the same. The content we have seen from these books has gone on, months later, to be included for free on their websites and in newsletters. Random House has given us content to release through our website as well.

JKR may offer free information on her website, but she’s also sold Deluxe Edition copies of her books for upwards of $50 each and the only difference being artwork. No one is forcing you to buy any of this content. It’s provided to those who choose to buy it and is in no way required for you to enjoy the Inheritance Cycle.

Many authors would not release chapters of their books in advance of the actual publication. Yet, instead of recognizing the fact that Christopher shares sneak peeks with us well in advance, giving us a great glimpse into the next book, you choose to lambaste him for trying to earn money for the hard work he performs?

You can’t have it both ways.

I have to say that I completely agree with guest’s comment. If I wanted to read the bonus chapters and the preview of Book 4, I would have to buy 3 copies of Brisingr! Each time after initially reading the book, I would be paying £10-20 to read one or two chapters of a book. To me, that is a ridiculous waste of money and seems like the series is being milked for all, or in fact more, than it is worth.I completely disagree with Mike’s comment. I will admit that many authors do release extra versions of their books and that some don’t have extra content. As far as I am concerned, Deluxe Editions are for fanatical fans (no disrespect intended) who want to collect memorabilia of their favourite book series. In fact, most authors release any bonus content for free on their websites e.g Robert Muchamore and the Cherub series. In fact, Mike cited the Harry Potter series as one which released Deluxe Editions without bonus content; I would like to refer you to J.K. Rowling’s Official Website, which offers, for free, deleted scenes and extras from her novels. I believe it is the authors way of giving something back to the readers, without whom, they would not be where they are today. Then again, Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance website, http://www.alagaesia.com has been so clearly uncared for and ignored that releasing bonus content there might not even be noticed for a few months, let alone seen by his vast fanbase. To conclude, despite my great enjoyment of the Inheritance Cycle and the fact that I look forward to Book 4 with delight, I feel that the Inheritance Cycle is the most exploitatively marketed series of books that I have ever come across, attempting to wrest every penny possible from us, the readers. I can only hope that Christopher Paolini will remember that he owes a great deal of his success to the readers and that, at some point, he will start to ‘give something back’.Yours,Shingi

    Hey,
Do you guys know if the chapter from book IV will be translated in Dutch? Will whole book IV be translated anyway?

  • Mike

Three copies is about $47 unless you’re paying ridiculous amounts of money per book.

I won’t apologize for feeling that someone should be compensated for their work. If you’re reading his book, he’s entitled to be compensated for it. It’s the same as piracy and stealing, just in a different form.

    Again, just my opinion.

Quick search on an Australian online book retailer came up with this:

    http://www.thenile.com.au/books/Christopher-Paolini/Brisingr/9780375826740/

The book cover has the Book 4 sticker, so I’m willing to bet you’ll find it somewhere. I recommend checking your local book stores. Make sure that the paperback edition you’re buying has that golden circle on the front saying that there’s Book 4 stuff in it.

You’re definitely wrong, “guest”. First of all, look at the history of *any* book. They first release in hardcover, then about a year later (or two in this case), they release in paperback. A lot of books (Harry Potter included, among MANY others) also release Deluxe Editions. Some, like Harry Potter, don’t even release with extra content… just different packaging/covers.

As for money, can you fault a copy that needs to make a profit for trying to make a profit? Christopher Paolini isn’t involved in marketing — that’s his publisher’s job. Nothing is new or different here. In fact, you should be thankful that there’s actually exclusive content in the paperback. Most paperback copies of books would just be identical copies of the hardcover versions. This is exciting, not greedy!

I realize that people will complain about anything and everything. I just wish that they understood what they were complaining about.

This is exciting, not greedy!I realize that people will complain about anything and everything. I just wish that they understood what they were complaining about.

Aw, I was hoping to see the excerpt here… (Though I understand why you can’t do that.) Oh well. I’ll find it when I go to the bookstore next.

Well, I feel like a jerk now. Looks like that post made earlier today was true, and I’d like to be the first to say sorry to the poster.

Yeah, I’ll elaborate more on what this means for Book 4 news going forward in tomorrow’s editorial. For now, enjoy the chapter!

I’ve read it and trust me, it’s worth the $10!

As we all know…the release of a chapter from the next book is generally the first in a steady stream of good news to come. 🙂
