Paolini’s Steinbeck Festival Presentation Video

As we posted earlier this month, Christopher Paolini attended the 2009 Steinbeck Festival in California! Thanks to an Inheritance fan who visited the convention, we now have a video of part of Christopher’s speech and question and answer session! You can check out the full video after the jump!

Inheritance fans interested in why Christopher was attending a Steinbeck festival may be interested to learn that Christopher penned the new forward in Steinbeck’s The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights, which this year’s festival was based on. Keep reading for the complete video and more information on The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights!

Interested in checking out ? The book, which includes a forward by Christopher Paolini, is available on Amazon.com for $8.

Please note that this is not the third Q&A session Shurtugal.com is doing with Christopher. This video was unique to the Steinbeck festival. Shur’tugal’s third Q&A will be released shortly.

  • Nightslayer234

So Chris and Mike. Is this interview going to be on time? I mean, parts 1 and 2 weren’t that bad, but 3 was really late. (P.S. I don’t mean this to sound mean, but I’m just anxious)

  • MeghanSwiftSword

    Atra esterni ono thelduin Chris!

    @Kapa

True, though I expect Eragon did find the true name of Brisingr, and what with all the hundreds of Dragon Riders from the past, at least ONE of them had to had name their sword after an element.

  • PadfootUnewraithSlayer

    EKA ELRUN ONO, CHRIS!!!!

  • Kapa

Hey, i just have a question about Eragon’s sword and why it can burst into flame (i would put it in the Brisingr fourm but for some reson all of the accounts i try to make never work with the registration) but i know it says that he may have found its true name, i was just wondering if because he named the sword a thing, an element, the sword would have to be fire, like the sword is fire because that is it’s name in the AL. This just came to my mind because of all the people saying that it was really stupid thing to name a sword, but i dought any other rider named there sword and something like an element right? and i think because it isn’t yet clear why it can burst into flames, it is a posibility

  • iHateElves

    Thanks for the update Chris.

  • Chris

Third interview should be posted tomorrow along with the post for the next batch of questions for you guys to ask

  • blinkandyoumissit

hey, just wondering, any word on when the third interview will be posted? thanks!

  • Shadeslayer70

Hey, Mike, I was just wondering if you were going to put up the post for us to ask the next batch of questions soon. Im just getting a little anxious.

  • PhoenixStarr

    Isn’t ‘puni’ spelt with a ‘y’ not an ‘i’?

  • Stenrgarm

i think the Eldunari are already apart of Galbatorix’s mind. Wrapping Eragon’s mind around his wouldn’t do any good because he would still have access to the Eldunari.

  • MeghanSwiftSword

True… However Galbatorix is MUCH stronger than Varaug, and I’m supposing that Galbatorix’s power from the Eldunari is already inside his mind. So Eragon would just get into a mind battle. Good theory though… Something worth considering.

  • joehall

In Brisingr when Eargon is fighting Vraugh he wraps his mind around Vraughs to prevent him attacking Arya and Saphira. Why then can’t Earagon use this same technique on Galbatorix and sever his contact with the eldunari. Then Earagon would be able to slay him at will assuming Mutagh and Thorn are out of the picture.

  • MeghanSwiftSword

    @Evarinya

    WHY!???:)

    MURTAGH ROX!!!:D

  • Daniel

Dragons are so much better than everything else in Alagaesia… 🙂

I still crack up when I read the title of that video!

  • PadfootUnewraithSlayer

    Hahahaha.

  • Evarinya

Murtagh is annoying me a bit..

  • PhoenixStarr

    That was amusing…and obvious…yet funny.

  • PadfootUnewraithSlayer

    Hahahahahahaha.

  • All.Hail.Emperor.Murtagh

“But not more awesome than Murtagh, I presume”-Alucard.

Not a chance. Dwarves are great, but Murtagh’s awesomeness goes off the charts. Hail Murtagh!

  • dragonfan

    @alucard

    Absolutely! 😀

  • MeghanSwiftSword

    @A.H.E.M.

Thanks for clearing that up. I knew it had something to do with sorrow or grief but I wasn’t sure… Thanks!

    @alucard

    Believe it!!:D

  • Evarinya

You may have a point there.. But actually, Didn’t paolini say, it helped to balance them out a little?

  • ZarithAril

A lot of people have been talking about Arya as the next rider, and while I’m not convinced that’s going to happen, I do think the last question could have some meaning.
Paolini said he put the Shade at the end of Brisingr because it made Arya and Eragon ‘balanced.’ It seems to me that the only way he can actually balance them (if that’s what he really wants) is by making Arya the next rider. Otherwise the two of them will never actually be equal.

  • iHateElves

As for the “slip” that Christopher supposedly made in an interview… I think he is faaaar too smart to make such a premature slip… If it even was a slip…

  • PadfootUnewraithSlayer

Hahahahahhaha, sorry, I had to laugh. ;D

  • alucard

But not more awesome than Murtagh, I presume

  • All.Hail.Emperor.Murtagh

    Uru’baen.

Uru: Word of dwarf origin. It can be translated either as “elder” or “wise man.” The literal translation would be closest to “sage.”

Baen: Word of Grey Folk/Elvish origin(Ancient Language.) It is pronounced “bane” and is a word used to express great sorrow or grief.

The name of Uru’baen is an intentional insult to the elves/dragon riders, meaning “wise man’s sorrow” “elder’s grief” “elder’s downfall” or possibly “elder’s mistake.” Paolini clarified this in the first post-Brisingr interview.

By the way, MeghanSwiftSword, “Place of Sorrow” would be said in the Ancient Language as “Ristvak’baen” which was the name given to the Rider stronghold Edoc’sil after Galbatorix defeated and killed Vrael there, known as such to the last Riders before Galbatorix killed them, and also to Brom and the Elves.

Now, as for the video itself, I personally am very glad to hear that the author himself acknowledges that dwarves are way cooler, funner, and more alive than elves. It is so right. Dwarves are waaaaaaaaay more awesome than any elf, except maybe Rhunon.

  • MeghanSwiftSword

I thought it meant The Place of Sorrow.

  • Stenrgarm

No, it means a few things. Like the Elder’s Folly.

  • iHateElves

How about uru’baen? It means the fools doom, right?.

  • PadfootUnewraithSlayer

Aye, that is the only word I can remember with that same lettering, unless he accidently almost said “Eldest”.

  • MeghanSwiftSword

Couldn’t agree with you more, Shadeslayer70.;)

  • Shadeslayer70

    Daethdr:
Thats what i was thinking too. It would be a very good name for the last book. I hope he releases the name soon. And i hope even more that we get a release date soon. 🙂 Not that i want him to rush it. I do want him to take his time and make it as good as it can be, im just anxious!

    NikiAgani:
No problem, i had the same issue.

  • Daethdr

    maybe it will be Eldunari

  • MeghanSwiftSword

Thanks M194. Hmm, that’s interesting… I hardly think it will be called Empire now, but who knows… Well you learn something everyday on here.:)

  • joe

he says in an inerview with a bunch of kids “… when i finish Eld-, finish the series…”

    sooo…

  • M194

    @MeghanSwiftSword

my friend bought the audio of Brisingr you the one that reads with you along and she said at the end there an interview thats how i know some other plp told me too

  • MeghanSwiftSword

Jesus Christ he was hilarious! That was a great video; thanks so much to the person who conributed that! And thanks for posting it Mike!:)

That last question… hmm… I place all of my bets on Arya for the Green Rider.:D

Wow, C.P. was great! Id’ve given anything to go, but I’m in Ohio with no chance whatsoever of getting to California. Darn.

M194, where did you hear that?

  • M194

oh and in the Brisingr audio at the end paoline says the name of next book will be something Eragon iherits so i doubt he inherits empire so it may a differ name 🙂

  • M194

awww i cant see the vid for some reason can some one tell me wat he said thats intersting plzzzzzzz like the important part of his next book 🙂

  • NikiAgani

    Thank you very much Shadeslayer70.
I was trying with hotmail but i open a new email in gmail now.

  • Shadeslayer70

    NikiAgani:
If your using hotmail that won’t work. Try Gmail, that worked for me.

  • NikiAgani

I have a problem with the registration in both the forum and the shurtugal website. There happens that the activation code isn’t coming in my email
    Can someone please help me?

  • PadfootUnewraithSlayer

    Oh okay.

  • Chris

The 4th book features a green dragon on the cover. That’s pretty much all that’s set in stone at the moment about it.

I remember hearing rumors that the third book was going to be called Empire in like 2005. This stuff was going around since before it was made into a cycle. As far as the title goes at this point, it’s just a rumor. The title probably won’t be released for months, so happy speculating.

As far as a character rising in the last book, I’ve never personally heard that, so it’s best to just treat that as false.

  • Shadeslayer70

    SquallLeonhart:
I read the exact same thing you did. I am fairly sure that it is from wikipedia before the series became a cycle.

    Xelba and Padfoot:
Yes I did hear all of that as well, and i am pretty sure it was from wikipedia, but again that was before the series became a cycle. I don’t think it says those things now. But Everyone should know that officially Christopher has still not released the name of the fourth book. The rumor that it is going to be Empire is just speculation, whether it was on wikipedia or not, (again im not completely sure that is where i read it).

As for someone “rising in the last book” I am almost sure that is just another rumor. A theory maybe.

Mike or Chris, if one of you could post something reasuring us that this is all just rumors that would be great. And if they actually do have some truth to them that would be great to know to. 🙂

  • PadfootUnewraithSlayer

Merlin’s Beard, where did you hear that????

  • Xelba

Where are you guys hearing all this stuff? Was it all in the interview, because I couldn’t understand half of it. Like, when did C.P. say that a character would “rise again?”

  • SquallLeonhart

    @Daethdr

“Empire will be the third book of the Inheritance Trilogy by Christopher Paolini. It is expected to be published in 2007, following the release of Eldest in 2005 and Eragon in 2003. Empire will continue two patterns between the titles: they all begin with the letter ‘e’ and have six letters.

Christopher Paolini has confirmed ([1]) that the cover of Empire will feature a green ferocious dragon looking towards the right. The cover of Eragon featured a blue dragon, Saphira, and the cover of Eldest showed a red dragon, Thorn. The name of the green dragon is not known yet. Since Christopher Paolini has red-green color blindness, it is strange that he would choose to have red and green dragons for two of his book covers. This cover, as with the previous two, will be drawn by John Jude Palencar. Paolini has also confirmed that a character who died earlier in the trilogy is to “rise” in the third book.”

that sounds like what you were talking about, so Empire could be the 4th book title, but we still can’t be sure, they didn’t even cite and sources.

What intrigues me most, is that they said Paolini had said “a character who died earlier in the trilogy is to “rise” in the third book.”, I don’t recall anything like that happening in the 3rd book, so if it is right, it should be in book 4, and I will be very interested to read it.

  • Daethdr

    Xelba:

i cant remember the exact place i heard that but i do remember that when it was still a trilogy the title of the last book was going to be empire. (eragon, eldest, empire: e with 6 letters) i do not know for sure but im assuming that because he had it picked out from the beginning it might be empire

  • Potterinhericycleblogger

Love the video. He is hilarious. I can’t wait to hear more about the fourth book. I just finished the third one. I loved it. Peace out!

  • JoannainAustralia

    Hi Mike,

I just want to say thanks for all your hard work on this site. I notice you do a lot of the posts very early in the am… so you must be a bit of a nightbird.

I love this site. It helps me to keep in touch with whats current. It can be pretty frustrating getting up to date news over here.

Is there some way I can join your email update without having to have a us phone company? I tried before but was unsuccessful.

To the rest – great posts. Lots of fun to read.

    Cheers,

    Jo-anna in Australia

  • PadfootUnewraithSlayer

Hahaha, sorry, mate, but I just think that dwarves have more personality. But do you know what is better than dwarves? HOBBITS!!! ;D

  • Evarinya

    Wow!
    That was fantastic.
Can’t wait to hear more about the 4th book :]

    Padfoot:
    I completely disagree with you!
Elves have lots of personality! Its just harder to spot it.
But He is right, dwarves have more personality than elves. But I still think that elves are better ;]

  • shurugalknight

The comment at the end only solidifys the possibility of Arya Becoming the green dragon rider.

  • Xelba

Deathdr: When did you hear that?

  • NationalSteinbeckCenter

Thanks for posting this! Christopher was a most gracious guest at our Steinbeck Festival this year. He must have signed hundreds of books. If anyone has additional video footage please send to me so that we can archive his talk. It was fantastic. Please email me clips to steve[at]steinbeck[dot]org. Thanks!

  • SquallLeonhart

    @ GinnapherChoy
Try contacting Random House, the books publishers, they should be able to tell you if that would be possible.

  • Corey

i know this is off topic but have they considered making a second movie.

  • aconstantEragonreader

it seems as if his publisher is about as anccious for his next book as all of us fans! he’d better hurryup,or he might have a riot on his hands. lol

  • Casey

while you wait til the 4th book comes out your can read the tomorrow when the war began series they are pretty good books

  • PadfootUnewraithSlayer

Hahaha, I know, the dwarves a loads better than elves most of the time. Dwarves have more personality!

  • dragonfan

Agreed, Padfoot! Everybody I know loves the elves, and don’t give enough credit to the dwarves.

  • PadfootUnewraithSlayer

Aye, hear, hear, for the “elves are boring”!!!! ;D

  • GinnapherChoy

I was curious but do you think that Mr. Paolini would be willing to speak at a library convention for young readers? You see I live in a town where all the younger children wants to be thugs and drug dealers and I would like to change all of that by exposing them to a creative and positive influence. If this is at all possible, please reply.

  • Gavz

dont know where to put this tho but, Ive started reading eldest (already up to page 256) and it will be the third time I go trough the trilogy (so far), heres the thing.. i dont read.. but its like Paolini has a spell over me lol

  • Daniel

    That was surprisingly funny.

  • Mike

Sorry but I don’t have the time to type up a transcript for this (transcripts can take hours). If anyone else is interested, please feel free to do so.

  • Deathdr

alright now i think that the title of the last book will be Empire. He said he had it picked out from the beginning and that was going to be the title of the third book of the trilogy

  • alucard

It’s much easier to understand with earphones… thanks to whoever posted this, it was a treat!

  • Magic

    wow ! : )
but i also didnt understand all, so transcript would be nice ^^

  • HB

    hey this is really good!

i struggled to understand some parts of it though, is there any chance of there being a transcript?

wish i could have been there

  • Shadeslayer70

WOW! Oh, jeez, i wish so much that i could have been there, it would have been so fun. And it seems like whenever Christopher releases new information to us, it just gets us asking more questions! 🙂

  • Mike

This is not Shur’tugal’s third Q&A with Christopher – this Q&A is entirely separate and unique to the Steinbeck festival. I’ve updated the news post to reflect this.

  • NightSlayer23

There seemed to be more questions. Like the video was cut off before he was finished. I don’t think that was the Q and A because those were people asking previously asked questions and then in my opinion, not very popular choices.

  • Chris

This is all we have. It is not the entire session. If another fan was there and took a video of it, contact us, and we can add it to this news post.

  • bookworm119

was that the entire Q&A session? There was a grand total of 4 questions so was there more that will be posted that we just didn’t get to see or is that it till next month?

  • PadfootUnewraithSlayer

    Hahahahahahaha.

  • Chris

Good video. I still remember him doing the “Die puny human!” line when I was at the midnight release of Brisingr haha.
I wish he’d release the name of the book already though. Especially since he’s had it picked out since before he started it. >_>
