Book 4 is Underway!

Christopher Paolini released his latest Alagaesia newsletter today, officially announcing Book 4 (the final book in the Inheritance Cycle) as being underway! In the newsletter, he teases fans about what he’s recently written, as well as discussing his personal feelings about working on the last book, Montana, a quill pen he received from a fan, and an interesting Inheritance joke. Continue reading to see the newsletter in full and for information on how to subscribe to receive these newsletters in the future! All of the Alagaesia Newsletters written by Christopher Paolini over the past four years are viewable in our Alagaesia Newsletter archive! Below is this month’s newsletter, sent on March 13th, in its entirety:

Kvetha Fricäya! Greetings, Friends!

I’ve been busy working on a number of projects: first and foremost has been Book Four. I don’t want to give away too much, but what I’ve been writing involves a flaming spear, a duel to the death, magic, elves, and werecats. Fun stuff! I’ve also been drawing Glaedr’s eye and editing deleted scenes for the deluxe edition of Brisingr that will be coming out later this year.

It’s strange to finally be working on the final installment in the series. After so many years spent thinking about this world and these characters, I sometimes find it hard to believe that I’ll be saying goodbye to them before too long. Still, it gives me an enormous sense of satisfaction to write out scenes that I’ve been envisioning for over a decade now, and I can’t wait for you to be able to experience them as well.

The weather here in Montana has been spectacular, alternating between ferocious, whirling blizzards that fill the valley with large, heavy snowflakes, and brilliant, sunny days, such as this one. Right now, a purple shelf of clouds hangs low over the Beartooth Mountains, while rays of pale sunlight slant underneath, illuminating the tan foothills and the dazzling, snowcapped peaks. Living here is a wonderful gift for me as a fantasy writer. If ever I need inspiration, I just look out my window at the landscape, and I feel as much awe and wonder as if I were looking at a dragon.

A very nice reader sent me a quill pen recently, which I write with occasionally. I had never used a quill pen before, so I was surprised by how much ink it can hold; with a single dip I can write a paragraph at least as long as the longest one in this newsletter. Pretty amazing! The only problem with quills is that you have to sharpen and reshape the tip every now and then, and eventually they wear away completely.

In these challenging times, it’s important to keep a sense of humor, so I leave you with this joke: Why is it so hard to get a Dragon Rider to listen to you? . . . Because his head is always in the clouds!

Oh that’s bad.

Anyway, I hope this finds you and your family well. And may your swords stay sharp!

Christopher Paolini

    Hi CP, Hey All,
I am such a fan of the series. I am a PhD student, College Instructor; yeah..I’m a 36 year old (female) adult :). Even though I have so much “OTHER” work to do, I CAN’T WAITTTTTTT!!! for the final book. I am sad to see the series go, however, this will be one that I will read over and over again. I love fantasy and SCI FI…Star Wars is an all time fav. Anyhow, one request…PLEASE for the love of GOD, DO NOT allow them to produce another movie! I was so disappointed! I paid money to support you CP, however… and I will leave it at that. I believe in your gift and support your craft.

Take care and may GOD bless.

  • Murtagh.is.the.hottest.thing.ever.

Sorry, I know this must be REALLY late to post, seeing as I’m posting in May and everything, but I love looking through old sites.

    @MeghanSwiftSword

Mabey it has something to do with Eragon catching on fire.:) Just a thought.

  • MeghanSwiftSword

P.S.- Mike, I love this site! Its awesome!!

Hey guys, any ideas on that flaming spear thing that Chris is writing about right now? Sounds cool.

  • MeghanSwiftSword

I’d rather not even speak about the Eragon movie. 🙂 It was absolutely terrible. They got everything wrong in that movie.Id like to think that they might make an Eldest movie, but probably not because Eragon was soo off……

Anyway I am like the #1 Inheritance fan and I cant wait for book 4 to come out!!!!

    I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bo(DK)

The reason the first movie was bad is because the director realy didn’t do a good job reading the book.

  • knighthawk7532

they cant bring out the eldest film as the eragon movie was so different to the book that it would take another film inbetween to explain everything just so eldest would make sence

  • HPfan

at least Harry Potter doesn’t delay with the making of the movies! They already have the last two movies planned out!

WTF happened to the Eldest movie!???!!?!?

  • Ash

Alyways felt that Eragon I far better than HP.But ofcourse not than Artemis Fowl may be.Hope Saphira is 4ever

  • mjpits

Hi, I haven’t read that pern thing but I have read dragon rider by Cornelia Funke and have been comparing and contrasting Inheritance series and that book. I love how people have a lot of different ideas about dragons.

  • Lucaith

Great ideas everyone, about carrying on to write prologues and about the dragon wars and stuff, sound’s great ;] I can’t wait for more x]

Could Chris possibl;y take a similar approach to Inherttance that Anna McCaffrey took with her Dragon Riders of Pern series, and do lots of different books focussing on Alagaesia at different times in it’s history, or even carrying on into the future to something like 100 years after the events in “Book 4”? Because that way we’d get to see Alagaesia develop and from a different perspective and different characters, because I’d imagine quite a few of them (‘cept probs Arya and the elves) would be dead and gone by then. Maybe?

Just an idea, because I love Inheritance and Pern x]

  • PunjabiPride

Harry Potter is the best no competition between it and the inheritance.Inheritanceis good but no way near Harry Potter!

  • DragonBoy23

Ok so I know this isn’t a theory thread so I’ll try and keep those thoughts to myself for now but some things are just bugging me too much to not say anything. First off, let’s start with AlekS. I agree with you that the last egg will hatch for Arya due to the fact that all the signs lead to her. She is growing closer and closer to Eragon and it is my opinion that sooner or later they are going to get together and since the last egg is male it fits perfectly seeing as both Saphira and Eragon need mates. Oh and there’s the fact that both her eyes and her magic are green which match the egg. Though that could have nothing to do with it.

Next I wanted to comment on something fan404 said. “aleks, you are rong. it will not hatch for arya and I can prove it!!! eldEST!!!!!!!!! er, 2!!! est 3 or more, proving murtagh and eragon have a brother, who the egg will hatch 4.” Now it is not my intention to be mean when I say this but not only does that not prove anything but it’s kinda dumb. If you pay attention to the books and the hints given in them, no other sibling exists. “Eldest” just refers to Murtagh. Now I may be wrong but I don’t think I because the names of the books are clues as to what is going to be inherited. Book 1 “Eragon” refers to Eragon’s namesake and the fact that he becomes a dragonrider like the first rider. Book 2 “Eldest” refers to the older brother he inherits and finds out about. It could also be about Oromis and the fact that he meets the oldest living rider. Book 3 “Brisinger” is obviously the riders sword he helps make and the way he becomes a fully fledged rider.

Finally I agree with everyone else in that there should be more than 4 books but if not I’d want to see a book on Brom, a book on Oromis, or a book on the dragon/elf war and the first Eragon.

  • Carebear

the person that posted on the 7th, HELLO!!!! A TRILOGY ONLY HAS 3 BOOKS IN IT!!!! if this were a trilogy, there wouldn’t BE a book 4

  • scaredxx5

I think he should write about the ele and dragon wars. and about those people that had bound magic into words. AND stuff like that.

  • PanicFOBBRISINGR

I think that he should write a prologue. It should be about Brom, and his dragon. hoe Brom killed Morzan and how Joed and Brom Got Saphira\\\’s egg. And DON\\\”T STOP AT BOOK 4 DO NOT EVER STOP NEVER

  • Seabhac

Not necessarily, eldest is a common term to refer to the older, or oldest child in royalty. Also, I will admit it is possible that there is another sibling, though it is unlikely. It also does not logically follow that the other child, if it exists, will hatch the egg.

  • fan404

aleks, you are rong. it will not hatch for arya and i can prove it!!! eldEST!!!!!!!!! er, 2!!! est 3 or more, proving murtagh and eragon have a brother, who the egg will hatch 4, know your grammer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this message will self destruct in 3 2 1…BOOM!

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • AlekS

DONT STOP WITH THE BOOKS!!! KEEP THEM COMING!!!! im not kidding. compared to the Inheritance series all books seem boring. im reading it for the third time now because they NEVER get old!!! Shayzlan2 about some extras. i think you should make books from Brom’s and Arya’s perspectives that would be amazing. like Broms adventures with Saphira (his Saphira of course) and i dont know what Arya’s story could be about. but they would still be cool. by the way: i think we all know that the third egg is a green dragon and will hatch for Arya. its a bit obvious. and Eragon goes to the elf homeland just like in Angela’s fortune telling. KEEP MAKING OTHER BOOKS TOO, THOUGH!!! if you do end the Inheritance just make more great books please!!!

this rant will self-destruct in 3…2…1….

  • jgregory

hello, IT WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL IF CHRIS PAOLINI WOULD SEE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think that Christopher Paoline should not stop at book 4!!!!!!!!!!! i have loved reading Eragon, Eldest, and Brisngr and CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK 4!!! he should continue writing the Inheretence Trilogy even after he writes book 4, i am obssessed with these books, they are the best books i have ever read, i enjoyed every part of the books and i think that it would be a shame to make the Trilogy only 4 books long. I know that plenty of people also agree with me about this. IF YOU ARE READING THIS CHRIS, PLEASE CONTINUE THE SERIES< PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE
if you are not chris, please help me get this message through to Chris P. I thank you very much for trying to help me if you did help me get this to him.

  • Jack

I actually timed myself when writing my book, and I wrote an average of a page an hour. And I type at 80 WPM.

  • Glorfindel

Wow, that was really off topic. Sorry.

  • Glorfindel

See, here’s another thing. I’m also a hardcore Michigan Wolverines fan. So I hate Ohio State and USC. And the Steelers have Lamarre Woodley, one of my favorite Michigan players. Buuuut, they also have Santonio Holmes, a former OSU player, and Troy Palo—– something or other, who’s a former USC guy.

  • argetebrithil

Well I don’t relate with street hockey or the teams but I am a big Steelers fan! GO STEELERS AND WIN ANOTHER YEAR!!!

  • Glorfindel

Duuude. I love street hockey. I also love reading. And Rangers Apprentice. If you didn’t know, the fifth book is out in the U.S. It’s called “The Sorcerer in the North”. However, I must say, that I’ve been a die-hard Detroit RedWings fan ever since I can remember. I don’t know if hardcore Penguins fans are a LITTLE bitter.

  • Shayzlan2

Hi, my names Jordan. I live In Pennsylvania. I have been watching this site for a long time now and recently made an account. I am a huge fan of Eragon, Eldest, and Brisingr. I finished Brisinger about a month ago, and was very..uuhh…bored I guess then I found the Rangers Apprentice books by John Flanagan and read the first four. They were very good books, but not as good as yours, Mr. Paolini. Right now I am in the Shannara books by Terry Brooks, and after these I plan to read they 19 Conan books that I have before the Fourth Book comes out. If you can’t tell I really enjoy reading. Aside from that I am either watching Hockey, (Penguins), football (Steelers) or playing street hockey. Also I ride bikes and take my Jack Russell for a walk. I live around McConnels about an Hour and a half from Pittsburgh. I’m out in the Country which I enjoy so much. I hate Cities. I live on a small farm with goats, chickens, rabbits, and more. Anyway, I just wanted to say keep on writing the Great books Mr. Paolini. Oh, by the way I was thinking something you could do that would be neat after the fourth book is that you could write like book 2 and 1/2 and maybe write about Brom and his adventures with his dragon, or Ormis and Glaedr. Something like that. Thanks for your time and “Eka elruna ono!” (I hope I spelled that right…

  • AnnieCato

I just wanted to thank you, Chris, for such amazing books. I have read the Harry Potter Series and is not better but different from the Inheritance Series – 2 different authors – 2 different style. I am slowly – very slowly – reading Brisinger awaiting “Book Four”. I also am a grandmother – so I am giving feedback from a much OLDER Generation! Thank you again – I am anxious to read any future novels you produce. Fricai onr eka eddyr

  • Dragoness

I CAN”T WAIT!!!!! I so need to find out what happens! Book 4 is gonna be so totally awesome, i have a deep feeling. I’ve never written with a quil pen before, that sounds interesting. I’m writing a book of my own, maybe i’ll try one.

  • smokejiggy

when the cycle was still a trilogy paolini was working on the entirety of the last book … now that he has split it into four books im sure he already has a good start on the last book. perhaps he has already written half but perhaps not … i think we will be getting a release date a lot sooner than we did on Brisingr.

  • Glorfindel

I’m sorry, but I think that you would have a very hard time making the case that Inheritance is more well written than Harry Potter.

  • Evarinya

Well it takes longer for a better story to be written then!
    ;]

  • Glorfindel

Meaning no offence to anyone, but I feel like Harry Potter didn’t take this long.

  • Mike

@maya – He takes just as long as the majority of other authors. You can’t write a 700+ page novel, edit it, and publish it in a short period of time. Be patient.

  • lorearia

Personaly I would be more worried about Christopher dying befor the book is finished. If that were to happen then we would never know how the story ends.

  • argetebrithil

ha! thats funny dont worry, maya you wont die

  • maya

ok ,I just had a thought, what if I died before he finishes it.he takes,,,,,forever to write.I know he’s briliant & it takes time but I HATE waiting!
    I can’t wait for years,chris,,hurry up please??

  • argetebrithil

    daniel wats ur book on?

  • Daniel

I know what CP means when he says that its strange to be ending a long project and leaving some of your characters behind. I just finished my 1st book and it feels really weird to introduce new characters and leave some behind.

  • Faolins

It’s cool he says friends I guess …

Better than some authors who hole themselves up in a room for 5 years , throw out a novel and start the prcess again 😀

  • feanarang

It’s good to have news of Book IV, even if it is news that he’s just begun, and, by extension, that it will be a while before it is released. lol.

  • Glorfindel

why does he call us friends? He’s never met us. And that joke WAS really lame. And I’m willing to bet (not actually of course) that the flaming spear is just an ordinary spear that someone throws, and as it’s flying through the air, Saphira sets it on fire.

  • argetebrithil

    coudln’t agree with you more

  • Chris

    He was being honest. 😛

  • Mike

I think people are just going along with Christopher’s “Oh that’s bad.” comment.

  • Faolins

    It’s a CP joke 🙂

  • argetebrithil

come on ppl just because the joke isn’t hilarious doesn’t mean it’s “lame”. its ok and well thought out

  • Evarinya

Lol true, but it was still pretty lame ;]

  • dastlion

That’s not a lame joke, guys! It’s a joke made by a mature man.

  • PinkLily

I luv the paragraph where u describe Montana it almost makes me feel like im there i can see it so clearly. thanks for that. and the joke is lame but we luv u for it:D keep it cumin CP!

  • Evarinya

I think it would be best if murtagh found a way out of galby’s clutches and eventually joins Eragon, because he needs all the help he can get.

You guys remember that sentance that was 7 words long? I think that has something to do with the battle that goes on.. Maybe it has murtagh in it.. but I doubt it.
    Oh the possibilities!

  • argetebrithil

i also hope murtagh wins if he’s the one in the duel. i don’t want him to die in the book, not that im a big fan of his but i think he’s has done nothing wrong but forced to so it would be best for him to be good again and away from Galby’s reach.

  • Faolins

By flaming spear , could he mean Brisingr ? Just referring to the sword as a spear , any weopon

  • All.Hail.Emperor.Murtagh

Ha! I like that joke, but it’s only true about Eragon. His head is always in the clouds. I don’t think it applies to Murtagh quite as much, though.

Elves, werecats, and magic were a given for this book. It’s the duel to the death that interests me. Whatever the circumstances, I hope that this duel involves Murtagh.

Why? Because CP stated that we’ll be seeing a LOT more of Murtagh in this book, and if he’s in a duel this early in the book, he must survive it. Therefore, he will win and utterly own his opponent.

Flaming spear . . . either an ordinary spear that’s been dipped in pitch and set afire, or it’s had a spell of fire cast upon it. Can any of you think of a character that uses a spear as their primary weapon? A know Roran has used a spear before, though he prefers the hammer.

  • lorearia

Can’t wait for Book IV !

  • Daniel

I love purple clouds. Almost every evening my sky is streaked with blues and purples and oranges. 🙂

  • alucard

He’s only just started after nearly 6 months? Still, YAY and I wonder what he was talking about. Purple clouds, lol

  • argetebrithil

    ok

  • Daniel

I’m just waiting for Book IV

  • Evarinya

    WOw!!
    Im SUPER excited now :]
    WE LOVE YOU CP!

  • Mike

Fan fiction is fine to write as long as you aren’t profitting off of it. We have an entire Fan Fiction section: http://fanfiction.shurtugal.com

  • argetebrithil

    @ imoratachi
shouldn’t u get a permission to write it?

  • Faolins

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

    IT’S ON THE WAY !!!!

  • Imoratachi

You’re my favorite author CP! I can’t wait for book 4 and the wait is me. I’ll have fun reading it and I’m even writing a fan fiction about Eragon (the book, not character), in Angela’s point of view. It’s fun to test my imagination with your story!

  • argetebrithil

i cant wait till book four, Cp ur awesome

  • Trianna

Ooooh, the lame joke. ;P We love you, CP!
